Get a high strength weapon and just crush his image while it's spawning before it becomes active and attacks you.
Fight is basically a 1v1 the entire time.

I didn't have much trouble with Pontiff. First phase is obviously simple and pretty much impossible to fail, when he summons his shade it gets kinda tricky but the shade has barely any life and I could deal 75% of its health while it was being summoned and it only took 1-2 hits to finish.
I had much more trouble with other bosses, I was surprised people rated this one as being so hard when I looked online.

Dark Sword with a heavy gem is one of the best weapons in the game
Butcher's Knife has A scaling, if low initial damage, right out the door, and dealing damage heals you
Greatsword is still pretty, well, great
also, try out the Executioner's Greatsword. You get it fairly early on and it does alright damage on top of looking pretty neat.

The upgrade materials are fuckin stupid in this game. They drown you in them to the point where I'm not even excited to see loot or a chest anymore, because I know 80% of the time it's going to be more upgrade materials, which I stopped needing 5 hours ago.
You can get to +3 very fast because titanite shards are so common, but then you have to wait. You'll find almost no large titanite shards until you progress enough, at which point you'll have 40 within an hour or two and you can get to +6 almost immediately, then you wait again. You hit another progression threshold and you'll have enough chunks to get to +9 super fast.
There's no progress of weapon upgrades. Pretty much all you get is 4 ranks. +3, +6, +9, then +10. I dont think there was a single time that I was not at one of those levels, unless you go back to firelink every single time you pick something up. I had 99 shards and at least 50 large shards before I had even found a single chunk.

They're in Irithyl, you have to go down. The abandoned church bonfire has a route that leads through a graveyard. It'll lead down, and you'll keep going down.

I somehow landed a lucky soul arrow on the hound beast and it stood up on its back legs and cried for enough time for me to shoot one more and a heavy one to kill it.
Has anyone else had this happen, with a melee weapon perhaps? I really hope there's some trick to this fight that would make it less horrible.

You can parry his first attack where he jumps at you. From there just double hand your greatsword and beat the fuck out of him when he calls in his double and it should die as it's spawning. That's how I beat him after a million tries.
