Since you're not gonna get many honest replies I'll give it a shot.
I think the games have had great potential that they never quite reached. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of Mafia II. There were little things like the authenticity of the world, seeing it evolve from the 40s to the 50s, hearing songs on the radio that you would have heard back then, and having a setting to make you drive the speed limit because cops would pull you over if they caught you speeding. Also vintage porn.
It all felt really genuine and authentic but they gave you this huge game map and nothing to do in it. The world could have felt so immersive but instead ended up feeling empty and pointless. Gameplay wise it was a good cover shooter and the driving was decent but it didn't do much beyond that. So basically the series has had a lot of potential that it hasn't lived up to.
That being said I don't like the idea of playing as a black guy in a Mafia game. Not that I have anything against playing as a black guy. San Andreas is still my favorite GTA, and I love Mario games, but the game should be about the mob.
Organized crime that is referred to as a mafia has always been predominantly Italian. You could make the case for a Russian mafia game, but, at least in pop culture, the mafia is Italian.
If you were going to make an organized crime game about a black protagonist, it should be about gangs. A hispanic gang would be about cartels. Etc.
It's not even that I'M racist, it's more of the fact that Italian crime bosses are very racist and this concept doesn't seem very authentic.
I'm willing to forgive it if the game is good, but the series has yet to prove that it is anything above decent.

I like both but Mafia had a great story worthy of the classic Hollywood mafia films. The gameplay and world were great too. Godfather and Scarface come second to it in my opinion.

1st is a masterpiece.
2nd could be a masterpiece, but 2k jewed out half of content and Vávra left studio. Was really disappointing, but still pretty solid. DLCs were utter shit, though.
3rd is made by a fucker that didn't even play Mafia games, so he made a Watch Dogs 2 instead. Will pirate because I like shit.

This game makes no fucking sense from a setting standpoint.
The second game had an amazing atmosphere. Snowfall, bombers flying over the city, I could just walk or drive around and enjoy it. Too bad the game itself wasn't very fun.
