It was honestly a pretty poorly-designed fight. The Storm Ruler just sitting there in the back of the room was pretty lazy when they could have had you work for it by making it required in a second phase of the fight or something. Plus, picking it up doesn't automatically equip it, so you have to manually assign it in your probably cluttered-as-hell equipment menu while Yhorm is being too aggressive to manage. I swear the Storm King actually gave you time to do this shit, but not here. Then, assuming you figured out how to actually use the special attack, the fight is a complete joke, especially if you did Siegward's quest.
The worst part of this, in my mind, that there's no logical reason to assume that you'd need the special ability to take him out, since he's not much more imposing than some other bosses you've fought, and about the same size as the giants that you could easily slaughter in the cathedral and dungeon. With the Storm King, yeah, no shit you needed a special way of attacking a colossal stingray that attacked you from the mesosphere.
Man, a lot of the gimmick fights in this game were just poorly-conceived. I just got done fighting the Ancient Wyvern, and he somehow killed himself when I was halfway to the place where I was supposed to Try Plunging Attack.
this fight is ripped straight from demon souls. if you played that then you know what to do.
