I got this game from a sale, gonna be my first Tales game. Anything I should know before starting this?
You should probably play Jude's story first.
It's the most linear game in the series, and the story and characters are shit. Fun combat, though. Would've recommended Graces F if you are limited to a PS3.

Tales of Xillia sets up the vastly superior Tales of Xillia 2.
What you should know ahead of time:
Money, levels, experience, and damn near everything except (expensive) DLC costumes does not transfer over.
In order to platinum the game, it requires hours of boring grinding, which in absolutely no way worth it.
Please do the Milla route. Jude's existence is filled with being cock-blocked and rejected.

I started with Symphonia, then played Phantasia, then played Legendia, then played Abyss, then played Vesperia, then played Destiny and Destiny 2, then I played Hearts, then I played Graces, then I played Innocence, then I played Graces f, then I played Xillia, then I played Xillia 2 and am currently playing Hearts R and Zillia
Tempest is the worst one, I "played" it for all of 30 minutes and gave it up.
Next would be Innocence because the gameplay is absolute trash. I haven't played the Vita version yet.
Then Zestiria.
Xillia is one of the best. It would probably go for me
Abyss > Vesperia ~ Symphonia > Xillia

Instead he is actually old (70 years old) while most Tales "old guy" characters are at their thirties at most. That is pretty much a first for Tales, and he is the oldest human character to be a party member so far.
Compared to his immediate predecessors (Jade, Raven) he is also good-aligned from the get go and opposed to being an anti-heroic figure, extremely supportive of the rest of the party, specially the younger members.

Preferences aside, there are a lot of scenes that end up making no sense in Milla's side, not so much in Jude's.

Because they aren't good and feel clunky by comparison. I actually spent a majority of the game using milla and leia and something felt kind of "off" about them. When I switched over to lewdger it became clear, his combat is so fluid and complete - they spend way too much time perfecting his playstyle and it came at the cost of bettering everyone else's combat. Furthermore, Lewdger had the tools available to overcome every threat and exploit every weakness.
Rather than making lewdger a 10/10 complete combat character, and every other character a 7-8/10. They made him a 20/10 character and everyone else ranging from 2-6/10
