made a sort of touhout 9 clone, basically it's a shmup where you kill shit and when you reach combo chains you can add even more shit on enemy screen until someone dies

problem is it's 100% placeholder assets and made in javascript/canvas so it's pretty easy to cheat and bypass any freemium content i might add

Its both depending on the circumstances. If you're hiring an artsfag to make and texture your models, its more than likely going to cost more than hiring an artsfag to do pixelshit. If you're doing it yourself its more time consuming since not only do you have to code the game, you also have to make and rig almost all the models AND you also have to texture the fucking things if you don't want it looking like complete ass.

Like I said before, Its just easier to do 2D. You can do 3D lowpoly all you want but if you're not willing to pay someone to either code or model along with you your game's more than likely going to be in development way longer than it should.

I misspoke.
What I mean is it is better to transfer all information and data to data storage objects such as dictionaries and arrays for purpose of computation because when you do computation especially with complex math formulas, the data is being processed by both memory and cpu.

If you compute it straight from the sprites or models properties/variables itself, the graphical data is processed together despite not being used and this create a huge lag.

How big is the difference? Data in raw form usually is only a few to kilo bytes big while graphics are from tens of kilobytes to megabytes big.

Try and see the difference.

Sorry I've never been to much into sci-fi. And the theme for my game won't be realism or anything close to that. One of the enemies you will meet in the game is a tribal that worships the moon and their goal is to sacrifice enough blood to pull the moon down. I've had ideas for one of the levels to take place on a gigantic moving animal.

I'm currently going though two game concepts.

1. An open world action platformer, objective is to pull off massive combos to progress though the game.

2. An Quake like Shooter with the regular gun pool. but you can modify them to have various elemental powers to traverse the levels with flying speeds. oh and giant bosses.

Been playing around with the settings on UE4 to try to make the artstyle somewhat similar to some PS2 games like Nocturne.

Alright. Maybe too complex, but here goes.

TL;DR It's a Civ-type game, but you actually control the emperor in an 2D top-down RPG format. In addition, you have a bloodline, and your traits are passed down from generation to generation. Lastly, you start out in the beginning of a very long term Tolkien-type world, and your goal is... you dunno, actually.

I'm thinking that you get technological, warlike/peacelike, etc traits and that determines what ending you get. e.g if you're the dominant species before you invent space flight, when you invent space flight another species might sabotage the mission, leading to a bad ending, because your secret goal was to go to space. You might get a "do this" mission that is your next step along the way if you're off course, but otherwise it's about you figuring out what to do. You never know whose toes you stepped on, so if you screwed up at some point along the way, your game is over -- but I'd make sure you could fix it (negotiate with the species).

As for controlling the character, you walk around and kill enemies or talk to them, make tons of decisions about the country, marry someone so the bloodline doesn't die, declare wars, explore new areas (especially during the caveman-esque times at the beginning), gather resources so there's no revolts.

Your bloodline is important -- it's like Rogue Legacy, but your ancestors influence your child once you get killed (by an enemy, an assassin, whatever). If you're strong, your child is strong. You often mutate and gain a trait (like insanity, leading to ineffective decision making, or ADHD, faster movement but can't look at a screen for that long without the screen starting to fuzz) or lose a trait that the bloodline had. You'll get a selection of 4-6 characters, sorta like in RL, but you can make your own to a reasonable extent if you decide to make a coup d'etat.

The problem with DayZ and the like is that their server Size's are way too small for the amount of land in the game. You'll more than likely walk for fucking hours in DayZ without seeing someone unless you go to conflict sites like the Airports or Elektro. Dayz servers should be 150ish max players, which is a really fucking hard thing to do, or put on a smaller, more condensed map. Zombie AI needs to not be complete shit/removed altogether and the UI needs to stop being a clunky fucking mess. Finally these games need to stop this open alpha shit.
As to why most Open World Survival games are shit, they're made/directed by amateur modders with delusions of grandeur or people looking to jump on a cash cow. If you gave a team of people who actually cared about making a fun game, led by a designer/director who wasn't pants on head retarded and had a sense of business, there's not a doubt in my mind that they couldn't make a good open world survival MMOFPS.
