Finished my first course. It's heavily inspired by La Mulana, so it's hard and has some light puzzles.

The thread died last night before I could post this. I liked the variety of traps and hazards. I didn't like the blind thwomp early on after you hit the first p-switch to drop the bullet bills. Also in that spot, you can bounce off of the bills and cannonballs to make it up to the door above and skip some of the standard path. I felt the standard path could use a checkpoint somewhere, it was a bit lengthy. Which was great, there was some fun platforming in there, but a checkpoint would be courteous. The hidden fast route at the beginning was cool. Last thing I'd say is I'm not sure if I liked the thwomp/star/bowser part or not, it seemed creative, but on my first run I accidentally killed the thwomp with the star before I realized I needed to go down through the bricks he'd break. Manual restarts are not a good feeling, especially if it's one of the last obstacles.

Where should I add the checkpoint to?

I had the same issue with the star power up on play testing, I don't want to drop the idea but it is gamebreaking.

I found the blocks the way they are intended, the bullet bill launchers are well off screen at that point.

I'm thinking checkpoint wise, that bridge that has the pipe entrance to the dungeon is about halfway. Challenge wise, shit gets real with the Bowser Jr., so either:

A) I want the section with the bowser jr and the platforms/vines to be the gatekeeper to the checkpoint before the pipe entrance.

B) I want the player to not have any pressure when dealing with this, at the expense of having to complete it again should they fail a later obstacle. In this case, put it just before the diamond door, maybe up on that bridge where the vine goes to the top of the screen, or wherever.

That general area would be good if you wanted a one checkpoint level.

This is my first level. I don't think it's particularly great, but it's pretty short. It mostly came about from messing about in the Maker tools just for the sake of unlocking all the creation parts. There is some trial and error involved, but I tried not to make it too much of a clusterfuck.

I'd also say, the second dungeon room with the burners/cannons/dry bones, it's tantalizingly easy to skip the top route completely by jumping from the dry bones platform to the exit pipe. Most people would just wait for the cannons to shoot, make the jump and be out of there. I'd put a wall there to force the player to take the intended route up through the burners and down the vine.

Interesting. I'll fix that for sure. I'm not really satisified with the dungeons rooms at all. I had planned on having it be water themed, built the whole water level and then made the secret saw room.

Didn't know you only had one subworld so the dungeon rooms are heavily modified water levels.

I also don't like the Browser Jr section with the stairs much either. Feels like its too much RNG bullshit

The section can certainly be handled, but the timing of everything could send a fire ball hurtling towards you right at the moment you'd be dealing with the hammer bro on the moving platform, so yeah, that'd be three elements applying pressure all at once based on when you start the ride. It's all up to you on how you want to make changes. Have fun, fearless challenger.
