I went out and bought Wing Commander 1 and 2 from gog recently and maybe it's just me but holy crap this game is harder than I remember. Maybe it's because I can actually play it at max speed as opposed to my 286 back in the day but I'm getting my ass blown the fuck out.
>>
>>335030818
the manual is pretty indepth but within the game you just get vague tips. I think I used a guide called 'x3 for dummies' or something that taught me how to set up automated trade convoys and what was worth buying/selling/building and how to do it.

It was a game I tried to pick up countless times because I knew there was a good game behind the learning barrier and eventually (with the help of the guide) everything clicked and I was able to pick up on what I should be doing.

the game will teach you how to fly your ship and thats basically it in X3: TC

There are three Descent clones/reboots coming out soon.

I was disappointed to find out that it seems as if only Thrustmaster and Logitech still make joysticks at this point. And Thrustmaster's basic model hasn't been updated in so long the most recent operating system listed on the box is Windows XP.

I used to have pic related, and I remember there being a dozen fucking options when you went to the store.

DESU one of the Ratchet and Clank Future games had great space flight and planet exploration (even if it was pseudo-railed).

Lots of smaller planets you an just randomly find, land, and explore on. Think it had space combat too.

Not since the nineties.

>its kind of hard to recommend one since spring stiffness and button layouts are mostly preference.

Yeah. But there's nowhere to test either of them. Best Buy doesn't sell joysticks at retail locations anymore and Fry's doesn't have any on display, charges full retail price, and won't price-match Amazon.

>How much do those two cost?

$46 and $28 respectively. The Thrustmaster seems nicer, but not twice as nice.

>>335035852
>one on the left looks more comfortable

I thought the Logitech looked like it was angled forward too far. But from the side there's not too much difference.

I'd also take suggestions for older USB joysticks.
>>
>>335036893
i had a logitech attack3 which is similiar to that logitech joystick. I found it was lousy at sticking to surfaces and had no weight to it so if I needed to go evasive manouvres I would have to use my free hand to hold it to the desk so my pushing and pulling the stick didn't lift it off the table or knock it over

Is there a freeroam space exploration game as good as Space rangers but with first person flying?
>>
>>335034880
I have the logitech stick.
Half of the 6 buttons on the base broke in half a year, but the stick is still working fine. The twist (rudder) control is very imprecise, and needs a massive deadzone and curve.
Otherwise it's still fine. I'm playing DCS A-10C with it, I don't use the buttons on the base anymore, I play with right hand on the stick and left hand on the keyboard because this way I have the 50+ keybindings I need in a HOTAS configuration.

It's comfortable, and a BIG plus is that it has 5 buttons on the stick as opposed to the 3 on the TM.

You get what you pay for, it's a cheap but okay stick.
>>
>>335037626
Also I was hoping that Freelancer would be it, but it was severely limited and story driven in the beginnig. Does it open up later? How open it becomes?

Why are space threads so superior to anything else on this shit ridden board?

>>335026430

The X-Series except the last one, rebirth witch is meh at best. The games can be okay-ish space shooters, excellent space trucking games or one of the best space autism games there is. Download mods, if you buy X:TC it on steam, there is a bonus package with usefull mods. If you want to do spees battles, download mods that improve wing managment and improve turrets.
Other than this, read up on some guides and never buy teladi ships, trust me, they look at cool as they are shit, argon/paranid master race.

>>
>>335037114
>>335037660

>>
>>335039136
Kind of like expansion packs.
They all have a different main storyline, but that's not really the main part of the game.
The engine and UI got important upgrades in TC and then in AP.
Albion Prelude is probably the best version to play.
>>
>>335039136
Best combination would be Albion Prelude with X rebalance mod. Requires Terran conflict though.

Do any of the games mentioned in here have fleet based multiplayer play?
I just want to join an online fleet and run cargo, do some mining or security for the good of my group.
Biggest problem i have with a lot of these space sims is that after a while i get so bored doing everything for myself, by myself
>>
>>335039136
>>335039458
This anon got it right. Mostly expansion packs that change/rebalce some aspects of the game. You can buy all of them, but most people consider TC the best of the series since reunion lacks some refinement (controlls, UI, balance) and AP added some elements that some people consider to be watering down the game (stock market, easy acces to loot due to war etc.).
AP and reunion are still very decent though and a lot of people prefer AP over TC.
>>
>>335037804
Freelancer opens up a lot. There are four major House, each with ~5 systems each. Then there are border worlds and pirate systems. You can download an Open SP mod if you don't want to do the story. It's very open world, though there is a linear scale progression in vanilla.
>>
>>335039962
>I just want to join an online fleet and run cargo, do some mining or security for the good of my group.

Nope, none of them currently offer that. Star Citizen certainly will be in a long while so hold on until then. If you want to give it a try, they have a free week going on atm until next friday.

>uninstall the game after my m7's repeatedly crash into eachother and blow up and realize that even with litcubes better scripting, the fleet commands are so retardedly clunky and horribly un-intuitive to the point where controlling a fleet just isnt fun whatsoever

it really baffles me how egosoft shipped the x3 games without any actual system in place to stop ships from crashing into things, they could have just disabled collisions from all ships except the players but instead thought that all your property constantly colliding and blowing up was fine..? and bounce barely does anything once you get to the m7/m1/m2 tier of ships, they CONSTANTLY smash into eachother or completely spaz out and keep doing circles around eachother because autopilot & bounce completely fuck eachother over and the ships dont know what to do

its a real shame because i was enjoying LU up till that point, i was excited to finally take on the OCV with my huge fleet then immeadiately i realized what a piece of shit trying to run a fleet is, and to add insult to injury egosoft made fucking x:rebirth instead of x4

If you can't grasp such a basic concept, I don't know how you managed to navigate to this Nigerian whittling enthusiast commune in the first place.

Things could get interesting when the empire falls. The most valuable space uncontested while an alliance consisting of almost all of somewhat relevant cooperations temporary controlling said space this could lead either to another war or lead to a new century of backstabbing allies to gain important asserts and systems. I like it.

That's when CCP released the first part of Walking In Stations (the Captain's Quarters area) and the ability to buy cosmetics for your character with real dosh even though their last update had fucked the balance with the space gameplay.
The backlash was a crying shame, too, because I'm convinced that if CCP had actually continued working on the WiS vision people would be more interested. Unfortunately, it's been dropped.
But hey, at least the space balance is better than ever now and their release cadence has good changes coming out all the time.

I downloaded freespace 2 and it looked super comfy and well produced but I never got around to it

elite dangerous is worth it for the graphics and immersion imo but you have to put effort into roleplaying and immersing yourself. It's basically a big grinding sim but the map tools and interfaces are really good

star citizen is taking forever but hopefully Squadron 42 comes out much earlier and is an actually good game

left is good but warning it is quite large. You can't reach all buttons with small hands

Starpoint Gemini 2 is a "nice" space game.

It's almost exactly like freelancer but with deeper gameplay and instead of flying a fighter, you fly bigger class ships. It feels like star trek online.

ergonomically I'd say the logitech 3d pro however the spring is stiffer than a teen on viagra seeing tits for the first time. It may take some decent use to break in the spring after a month or so but it's worth it. If you don't want to wait that long you can always do the zip tie method. Moving up I'd say the saitek 52pro has the next best stick for the price and comes with a dual stage trigger that works as two individual buttons, the throttle however is nothing to write home about and the indents for both idle and after burners are TOP OBNOXIOUS. If you plan on branching out into DCS at all this is a good starting point. $50 more from that you can either go CH products and buy each piece individually where each one is master crafted and excellent made in america quality or you can go the saitek x55. the 55 is nice because they've updated the programming UI to make it easier to use, the layout for buttons and hats are better, and it's split throttle with no indents. It also comes with all the buttons you could ever want in a space game. My issue is the poor QC and support. I received a bad stick where if you twist it to the left at all all of your controls on your stick lock to what ever position they were in so if you were firing and ruddered left then you would keep firing regardless of trigger pull. same with all other buttons except for any on the throttle.
There really isn't anything between 200-300 since the next stick up is the thrustmaster warthog which is almost a full reproduction of the a-10's control surfaces but costs $450-500

Best part about freelancer was it didn't have overly complicated controls, why can't new space games have simple yet fun controls anymore
>>
>>335054958
They're not that complicated once you learn them. You can learn can you?
>>
>>335054958
because I spent money on sim equipment and I want to use it. Physics based stuff is fun.

the star citizen forums are hilarious btw. So much shitstorm about mouse controls. Because you could basically play FPS using turrets with mouse. Not sure how balanced it is now though.
>>
>>335055518
I could but that doesn't mean I want to spend a few minutes and possibly crashing in order to dock or takeoff from a station
>>
>>335046292

See all that stuff for 1,99€ or less? It's cosmetic shit.

If you download Freespace 2 Open, no issues at all.

The devs released source code of this game some time ago and it worked wonders. Entire FS1 campaign has been ported over, all assets (models etc) look 1000x better and the game has no problems running at modern resolutions.

I've got a thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X

My joy for Elite Dangerous died out long ago, and for some reason I just can't bring myself ot play DCS World anymore.

The joystick itself could be stiffer, it's supposed to have a damn tenson knob on the back but mines does fuckall, or I'm not as much of a fatbody as society would have me believe.
