So /v/, is vr a meme?
>>

/thread
>>
/v/ is not a place to discuss vr since everybody here is a neet and you can't torrent hardware, of course they will dismiss it since they haven't or never will try it
>>
give it some more time, like 50 years ...
>>
What happened to vr anyway?

All that hype and buzz everywhere but the moment they actually released them no one has said a word about them.

Is it officially over again for the next 10-20 years?
>>
>>335026150
Man as an /o/fag I see this all the time, if you say one negative thing about anything some autist sperg out and goes NO ITS NOT BAD UR ALL JUST POORFAGS LMAO STAY JELLY AND MAD XDDD
>>
The comic that feature dudebro /vr/, salty /v/ and loli /jp/ has the best explanation. I don't have one though.
>>
>>335026361
it's right you know, almost nobody here has used vr.
>>
VR is amazing. Can't wait until I move to my new flat so I actually have space for my Vive.
>>
>>335026150
hey wait a minute, we have a /vr/ board
>>
it's a stupid gimmick that i knew was going to be a financial failure
>>
>>335026272
the answer to this is both Vive and Rift are having massive shipping issues. I bought a Vive and mine got delayed 2 and a half weeks, but a lot of Rift preorders are getting sent back months and months. Not enough people are playing because they flat out dont have them yet.
My Vive is actually arriving in a few hours
>>
>>335026620
What made you pick vive over rift?
>>
>>335026568
Retro video games is /vr/.

If you think /v/ is full of elitist assholes then you haven't seen /vr/
>>
>>335026710
It was a gamble. The way the Vive works is that anything developed for the vive will work for all VR platforms, but things developed for oculus will be exclusive. Vive is about an open platform, OpenVR.
on top of that, the Vive in its current state already has the controllers, while Rift is getting super delayed for having theirs.
Prelaunch, there were a lot of complaints with the Rift's tracking ability, and their screen-door effect (visible pixel spacing). Since launch of cource the new Rift's screendoor effect is actually slightly better than the Vive's, but its still one of the reasons.
Budget Cuts, Job Simulator, and Raw Data looked too good to pass up.
and finally, I feel that Valve has got my back, theyve been doing a fuckton for devs to develop for the vive, like give away somewhere around 800 of them to devs to use
>>

The telling trait of higher intelligence is the ability to judge things without having direct experience of them, i.e. abstraction.
>>
>>335027106
Holy fuck you are retarded, vr is something nobody has experienced before
>>
>>335027250
I wouldnt go that far, some Vives still arrived on schedule. Plenty of people have their hands on them
>>
>>335025758
i dont know why these VR developer retards didnt think about making a flagship game to go along with their fucking goggles

at least half of what was dumped into developing the goggles should have been shoved onto a studio to crank out one big kickass VR game for the fucking goggles to show off how cool and awesome it/they will supposedly be

i mean would the Xbox even be a thing without Halo flagshipping the damn console?
>>
>>335027291
As a concept it's something nobody has experienced before, therefore the pseudo-intellectual fedora gibberish is completely meaningless because you cannot imagine what it is like

Its a 3dtv combined with a TrackIR. you could also say a 360 display which also exists.

An intelligent being, can tell that getting burned is going to be really painful even without ever being burned itself.
I'm aware what immersion is, I've got extensive knowledge of videogames and heard plenty of various opinions. That's enough to form a compelling opinion, which I've got faith it's going to be pretty similar to reality, just like happened to me with 3D faggotry and motion controls.

You should give a bit more trust to your brain, boy.
>>
>>335025758

>>

>it's another "college kid having an euphoric experience" episode on the internet
>>
>>335027950
From what ive been reading, itll take a few hours to set up. The lighthouses what im the most concerned with, everything else is a bunch of wires, drivers, and programs that im not too worried about. My playspace is 7ft x 7ft
>>
>>335027832
It's actually really hard to explain. I was skeptical of the tech, a few years back, until I tried it myself. It's partly about how good your head movements can be tracked and partly about the way your body reacts to things that are perceived to be there, next to you, that are your size or bigger. There's no real other point of reference to the experience of feeling like there's a lifesize being next to you.

also, you brain is tricked really easily when you have an HMD on your head. Have you ever played Mirror's Edge? When you fall of a building in that game, you can kind of feel it in your balls the first few times. Well, with an HMD, that feeling grabs you by the balls and punches you in the gut.
>>
>>335026361

>>
>>335027968
Sure kid, maybe one day you'll grow up.
>>
It's a gimmick for most entertainment purposes except for porn.

It can be useful in other fields, though.
>>
>>335028232
I get it dude, the way they all work together tricks your brain. It makes you think you're really there. Im just saying though, at a technical standpoint its the sum of those parts
>>
>>335028524
>at a technical standpoint its the sum of those parts
Is that really relevant, though? I mean, it's the user experience that we're concerned with here.
>>
>>335028280
I used an Oculus DK2 that a couple of friends bought to try and develop weird games with it. Of course, the experience wasn't perfect, the FOV wasn't that wide, there was a perceptive screen door effect and the head tracking was limited in the space that it could work, mostly because the camera was close to my head, I think.

But even with all of that, you can easily forget everything and get immersed in what is shown to you. It really is quite powerful an experience. If I had the money, I'd buy an HMD right away, but, that's not happening anytime soon. Maybe next holiday season.
>>
>>335028524
>at a technical standpoint its the sum of those parts
So what? You can apply that to literally everything, we are talking about the experience here not the tech behind it.
>>
>>335028652
>>335028606
I didnt realize when someone asked that question he wanted some kind of ethereal euphoric answer. Sorry if I dont turn on my hype man marketer copy.

VR is a meme to a degree, until it gets better and cheeper it will mostly just be a meme,

Most likely gaming will seperate itself into VR and controller seeing as they both specfically cater to different types of games and gamers,

VR will prob find a place in arcades

>>335027717
I believe that you are wrong here. To be able to judge something, you need to have points of reference. Have you ever seen a child faced with a candle for the first time? Little shit doesn't know that that nice flame is gonna burn him. He touches it, realizes his mistake when it hurts and then cries.

So, if you raise a human, all the way to adulthood, in a white, featureless, room and the put him out in the world, motherfucker won't know what a fire is. He won't know that it's gonna be hot or even that heat can burn and hurt.

VR is kind of like that. The tech right now is far better than what existed 20 years ago. I tried those shitty HMDs in the 90's. What we have now is in another league altogether.

I don't particularly like Palmer Luckey and his use of corporate style buzzwords, but that mythical "feeling of presence" actually exists. It's totally different than watching a 3d movie or playing arma with TrackIr.

And the waggle controls? I haven't tried 'em, but something tells me, because I have previous points of reference with vr tech, that if the tracking is as convincing as what I felt with the HMD, it could be pretty cool.
>>
>>335025758
Do you faggot even know what that word means
>>
>>335027106
Funny because before I even had my DK2, I understand the prospects of the technology and was excited about it. Don't mistake bitter pessimism for being realistic.

Plus the idea that people that haven't tried it would know better than those that have, is utter stupidity. Like that youtube video people keep posting, naysayers are desperately looking for anything that supports their ideas and pretending it's the only evidence there.
>>
>>335029447
No, they don't and they haven't for years. YEARS, man.

But, there's still a colloquial way that it's used here, so you better get used to it.
>>
>>335028232
Maybe a good analogy would be comparing visiting a location to looking at pictures of it.

The Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls don't seem like much in photos but when you're there in person and take in the immense scale of it, you really appreciate it. It's the same difference between the tiny window of a monitor and a 360 VR experience.

It will be a bit of a fad for a while like the Wii. No way it will stick, though, because you can't actually play any good looking games due to the fact that:
A) Graphics need to be worse because they need to run at 90 frames per second in both screens
B) You can't release a game that has normal controls without having half the userbase barfing

Only good application for it is driving and flying games.
>>
>>335030249
I got that, Wevr Transport because i heard a rumor it gives you the whale thing Theblu or whatever for free.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes now has vive support and i already had that, thats for if you have friends to play with either in person or on a voice server.
and I got Virtual Desktop, Space Pirate Trainer and the demo for Budget Cuts.

https://virtualart.chromeexperiments.com
>>
>>335030702

>>
>>335029768
Yeah, I guess. I might use that analogy the next time someone uses the "it's only a 3d monitor strapped to your face" excuse.

I've actually had an experience with vr that fits the analogy perfectly. I was at an art show style exhibit, last year, where the had a bunch of HMDs running documentaries filmed with 360 degrees cameras. Even if the camera tech was a nit janky and not quite there yet, there's nothing quite like being in a yurt in mongolia and seeing the daily lives of yak herders. There's a moment where a herd of yak pass all around you and it's pretty impressive.

There was another one about a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan. It really changes your perspective on it when you actually feel like you are there. There was a scene where they showed the inside of the tent with all the videogames. It was a bunch of old ass PCs playing these old videogames. I turned around and behind me there was this kid playing GTA 3.
>>
>>335030832
wheres this jordan game?

that sounds fucking crazy. how can i see this?
>>
>>335030993
I'm not sure of its availability. It was call Clouds Over Sidra. I'll try to find a link.

It's more of a documentary than a game, though.
>>
>>335030625

>>
>>335031162

>>335031162

>>
>>335031158

Whats the best way to view this kind of stuff on the Vive?

>>
>>335031328

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wENwGQckN_8
>>
>>335030249
Don't have a Vive but most of the free games and demos on steam look like they're worth downloading even for short experiences.
>>
When PSVR comes out we'll know for sure.
>>
>>335031406
Yeah, that's it. Unfortunately, I can't help you with the Vive thing. Like I said, I watched it at a vr exhibit about 10 months ago. It looks like it works with gearvr and google cardboard, so even if it isn't supported by the Vive, someone might have hacked up a solution for it.

It also looks like you can view it online as a 360 video, you could be able to view that with the vive. Don't know if there's a difference between the vrse app and viewing it on youtube, though.
>>
>>335030249
If you don't mind something in development, Hotdogs, Horseshoes and Handgrenades is fun. Not a huge amount of content because it's not finished, but the gun mechanics are really cool and I'd love to see a full game with those mechanics.
>>
>>335031989
Did they even say they were making a full game? I was under the impression that it was going to stay as a sandbox.

Im also wondering Bullet Train is coming to Vive or is it staying a rift exclusive
>>
>>335032118
I didn't mean to imply it would be more than a big sandbox, I just meant that a full game with the same amount of effort put into the guns would be great. Something like WW1 trenches to give you a reason you can't run around. As long as more stuff keeps getting added to HHH, I'll be happy to start it up every week or two to try it out.
