not much of a "cosmic" horror if a player can plausibly fight it and win.

that being said, Bloodborne comes to mind.

Halo, though the games don't give you a good sense of it since the flood is only at relatively small scale infection levels.

>mfw the latter bits of the forerunner flood war are basically a far, far future cosmic horror version of the war of creation with stars being flung around as weapons and the flood tearing rips in spacetime and shit

everything in the forerunner novels sounds so dumb out of context but is the coolest shit when you actually read it. Too bad it kills a lot of the mystery in the lore

Ruin has come to our family.

You remember our venerable house, opulent and imperial, gazing proudly from its stoic perch above the moor.

I lived all my years in that ancient, rumor shadowed manor. Fattened by decadence and luxury, and yet I began to tire of conventional extravagance.

Singular unsettling tales suggested the mansion itself was a gateway to some fabulous and unnameable power.

With relic and ritual, I made every effort towards the excavation and discovery of these long buried secrets, exhausting what remained of our family fortune in swarthy worksmen and sturdy shovels.

At last, in the salt-soaked crags beneath the lowest foundations, we unearthed that damnable portal of antedeluvian evil.

Our every step unsettled the ancient earth, but we were in a realm of madness. I alone fled, laughing and wailing at those blackened arcades of antiquity. Until consciousness failed me.

You remember our venerable house. Opulent and imperial.
It is a festering abomination! I beg you, claim your birthright, return to the manor, and deliver our family from the ravenous clutching shadows

Of the Darkest Dungeon.

Introduced a Good vs Evil system to the mythos. more or less turned it into generic dark fantasy. It's telling that the two Cthulhu RPGs (Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green) explicitly ignore Derleth's additions

Ah, I think I understand what you're talking about. I personally feel like the mythos could have used some fleshing-out, but I agree it felt a bit bloated at the end with a bunch of misfit additions from unqualified authors. I'll have to do some more research. Thanks for the motivation.

'Fighting' a cosmic horror is one sure way to remove both the 'horror' and 'cosmic' element, but sure, there's plenty of games that do this.

WoW has had you challenge several weakened cosmic entities over the expansions and Dead Space's underlying theme and name is an unwinnable fight against cosmic-like beings.

I feel like Path of Exile gets some of the cosmic horror feel right. A lot of the enemies you fight are twisted beings corrupted by powers beyond anyone's understanding. At one point you end up having to kill this thing simply called "Thr Beast" but you never actually directly kill it, only the guy that wants to use its power to re-shape creation.

Too bad most of the playerbase couldn't give two shits about the story.

PoE lore is actually really damn sweet, I like that you're an exile, I like Wraeclast being a beautiful but hostile, cursed land, a graveyard of civilizations, exploring the ruins feels great.

I'd legit play an actual RPG in the setting.

Cosmic evil was defeated in The Dunwich Horror, and it's servants were defeated in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, even Cthulhu was liquified by being rammed by a ship.

Freespace.
>>
>>335025624
Cthulhu's fucking weaksauce though. He isn't even one of the outer gods. Someone could fuck him up easily given enough prep time. Abhoth on the other hand would probably end up absorbing anything coming his way.

My call of cthulhu core rule book says he turns into gas if you actually manage to damage him enough, which is almost impossible because huge health and armor values.

And then he recombines himself after like 2 minutes.
So you cant actually get rid of him forever.

"But Johansen had not given out yet. Knowing that the Thing could surely overtake the Alert until steam was fully up, he resolved on a desperate chance; and, setting the engine for full speed, ran lightning-like on deck and reversed the wheel. There was a mighty eddying and foaming in the noisome brine, and as the steam mounted higher and higher the brave Norwegian drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. The awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht, but johansen drove on relentlessly. There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler could not put on paper. For an instant the ship was befouled by an acrid and blinding green cloud, and then there was only a venomous seething astern; where - God in heaven! - the scattered plasticity of that nameless sky-spawn was nebulously recombining in its hateful original form, whilst its distance widened every second as the Alert gained impetus from its mounting steam."

It was liquified, and being so was clearly involuntary - it wanted to devour them but couldn't due to having to recombine, T1000-style, after being splatted.

You never know. POE isn't exactly explicit in its storytelling. I wouldn't be surprised if they made an act 5 and made the beyond enemies the true big bad.
>>
Problem with Bloodborne is that for cosmic deities, the Great Ones were fucking small.

>>335027643
I don't remember the Great Ones being salt giants.

That said, Drakengard 1/3's endings are great in a similar way. Cosmic horror without the cosmic horror, kinda.
>>
>>335028137

That's because they're based off the Great Ones from the Dreamlands, not the Great Old Ones in the real world. The Dreamland gods were humanlike entities, which is still present in the designs of all of the Great Ones in the game (Ebritas' eyes, Amydagla's hands, the Emissary, Living Failure and Orphan's bodies, Kos' face). The Moon Presence has a humanoid form but since he represents Nyarlathotep the shapeshifter from the Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, it's excused. Oedon, being formless and having a thing about impregnating women, is Yog-Sothoth.

they are flat out not meant to be horror. they're just meant to be a surreal fantasy adventure in the same vein as Gulliver's Travels or the Seven Voyages of Sindbad
>>
>>335029784
>in the same vein as Gulliver's Travels
Dream Cycle was most definitely not meant to be satirical.

Also oh god, I've just remembered that he traveled to a land of sentient horses in one of those books and almost got raped by mindless humanoids who lived there.
>>

>>
>>335028137
To be fair, relative to humans "deity" is a flexible term when you deal with anything beyond out understanding.

>>
>>335015302
You could argue it doesnt, as you can overcome them. However 2 endings end with not solving any problems at all. The moon presence is still alive and guides everything. The other sees you turning into a great one and seeing to the universe as you see fit. I guess you can't really escape it at all, none of it is by your will.
>>
>>335015302
Not really since you can kill the Moon Presence.

It's still one of the only ones that did lovecraftian right though, the game starting relatively tame with werewolves and ending with moon aliens was great.
>>
>>335018735
Cthulhu is entry level Lovecraft and arguably one of his worst works.
>>
>>335032010
The only true Great One you encounter in the whole game is the plain doll, and she can't be killed.
>>
>>335032010
>Not really since you can kill the Moon Presence.
to be fair before you can kill the moon presence you have to overdose on third cords so you start to lose all humanity and became a old god yourself
