Other than having too many windows, the story lost it's focus and fell into a recursive tarantino/escher-esque spiral of non linear storytelling that didn't add anything to the game beyond padding out the lore

Story was incomprehensible and messy.
Somehow had LESS variety per level than the original game.

you could kill people, all you had to do was intentionally beat 2 people to death with your fists and your screen would turn red at the edges and Evan would take his jacket off. At that point you could use blades and guns.

I hated the focus on firearms this time around. I like the intimate brutality of Hotline Miami, I can find a run-of-the-mill twinstick shooter anywhere.
I don't mind guns as a playstyle, but focusing on it took away HM's uniqueness. Also, fuck the ending, I know they were trying to make a point about the ultimate act of violence, but fuck the ending.

I know that, I also know that those guys are the kind to say 'nah, we're not doing that anymore' then just drop it out of the blue with no build up whatsoever. HM has enough power behind it they could get away with a surprise release with no marketing.
