I know those feels bud, I too have many depression spikes (sometimes for months at a time). Here are some suggestions.
If you're fine with MMOs I would suggest FF XIV. There's a fuckton of stuff to do. Join a guild though so that you have people to socialize with too, it helps.
If you want a single player experience then there are games with no defined ending you can do, like Civilization 5, Mount & Blade, Stardew Valley, etc.
For multiplayer non-mmo stuff you can look at Vermintide, TF2, Diablo 3...

He might be getting help, but the shitty thing about depression is that it takes time to deal with. He might be in the seemingly eternal hell that exists between starting a medication/therapy and that medication/therapy actually producing any results.
My depression appears to be a chemical imbalance rather than any legitimate environmental issue, so I've had a lot of downtime waiting for pills and crap to take effect. Time during which I want to make my mind busy so that I don't have to think. Games are good for helping shut down.

Monster Hunter was amazing for making me completely forget about everything. I was always up for playing it, too. A lot of times I just don't feel like playing a video game and end up wasting my day on the internet instead. Some days on my MH kick I didn't even boot my computer.
fighting games will actually reward you for time invested and make you feel good about yourself.You will need to actually get gud, though, you can't just accumulate enough hours to overcome superior play.
