only thing is does is remove impurities from all the pounding. you can probably get away with 3-4 folds though

The cutting edge of the katana is hardened.
The backside is softer allowing flexibility.
The hardening of the blade allows it to be more sharp than any floppy europoor "sword"

It doesn't prove anything.

You can make a piece of steel into whatever shape you want, with whatever kind of steel you want, of whatever quality you want.
>>
>>334969245
Im not arguing a long sword from europe would beat a katana, but Katana's are sharper. You can have two sharp objects easily cut a tomato, now do the pig test and see how many bodies it can cut with one swing.
>>
>>334969924
Both would have been weaker.
Even then, one hit on the side from the longsword and the katana is over.

oh please

that dumb gif has one sword held hard in a vise, with a guy whacking it with the other as hard as he can.

if two people hit their swords against eachother, they would absorb more impact than their swords.
>>

i could look up and post some coldsteel videos but i am too lazy, european middle age swords beat the katana there every time, with every test they have

The 1000 folds is actually because Japanese steel is very shitty.

There's a myth going on about how Japanese swords are durable but they're really not. It's light and sharp and that's about it.

which proves that he got a katana with really soft steel, probably deliberately, because he's a german, and is biased towards favoring a sword that was used in his history.
>>
>>334969123

Technically, medieval straight swords were for cutting and chopping first, thrusting second (many of the long swords make poor thrusting weapons).

Chopping fell out of favor when armor went the way of the dodo, hence you see sabers coming into use in Europe as gunz made armor too cumbersome.

All swords can be as sharp as one another.

Katana blades are good for cutting and thrusting. They're not that good at chopping.

Lol
I'm not saying the Katana wouldn't lose to a euro sword overall. Im saying the Katana is sharper, thats it. But sharpness doesn't mean shit against plate armor the euros had. Samurai vs Knight, a Knight would win.
But the Katana is the sharper sword.
>>
>>334971234
I don't know what this is supposed to mean. I used to be into sword shit, and amongst both european sword fans and japanese sword fans, it was understood that cold steel stuff was not remotely authentic.
>>
>>334971248

Technically, softer steel is better for swords, as they bend rather than shatter.

It's also silly to ever hit another sword or armor with a katana; they aren't made for that type of impact, unlike broader European [and Chinese] swords.
>>
>>334968514
Medieval swords weren't particularly sharp in some periods since a duller blade is more effective as a blunt attack against armor.

Katana's were shitty steel, through and through.

Regardless of which type of sword is stronger or more practical in combat, katanas are OBJECTIVELY cooler than western swords.

Both in game and IRL.
>>
>>334968720
If he found Cathedral of the deep, pretty sure he knows where Road of Sacrifices is.
>>
>>334971248
but anon, japanese steel is softer, that is why they had to bend that shit so many times
>>
>>334971354
Neither of those swords used in that video were made with actual period methods and materials, so that has no bearing on the accuracy of the results of that video.

Also, poor quality steel was folded to increase strength, as has been mentioned. That's not just a japanese thing either, early medieval steel swords were folded in a similar way. Higher quality steel basically negated the need to fold it, but it wasn't necessarily that much stronger.

>but it wasn't necessarily that much stronger.
They were blades used for war, thus it was needed for your sword to not to break in the middle of the battle.
You could break a katana with your hands.
>>
Any jokes aside, the Katana was a well-designed product of the circumstances of Japan at the time of its creation

>Sharp as shit
>Thin so it doesn't use much steel
>Folded so the low steel quality is compensated for

Head to head, it loses to plate armor and the longsword because it turns out that cutting power means little against steel armor and plate outside of anime magic. That aside, it doesn't really matter if you're not retarded, because the katana is an elegant solution unto itself of resource scarcity.
>>
>>334972314
This
The entire art of the katana was to quickly cut the opponent in one attack, it relied on both fighters to follow a strict code of honor.
Ofcourse nobody else does this so whenever the Samurai got into a fight with anything that wasn't Japanese they got their asses handed to them.

To be fair, curved and thinnish blades are good for cutting, and they tend to be nice and light to allow for long drawn out strokes (ha ha).

They suck for chopping, though, which is better if everyone is wearing armor and you have to chop for the weak spots.

They look just...right

One handers look too short in the hilt (not a fault of their practical use; they're made to chop whilst wearing armor)

Claymores and the big German stuff look obnoxiously big (again, they have their practical use)

Whereas hand and a halfs have a nice long blade with a hilt and guard that is in proportion

I've played around with most swords, and hand and a halfs feel like the most versatile too in regards to practical use

Katanas are made inflexible which is why they're more likely to snap than bend. There is no reason why a flexible sword would be duller than a Katana.

Also folding isn't like you think it is. They take a bunch of different pieces of metal and stack them on top of each other (let's say 3) and then heat it until it's red and cut it in half and fold it (so now you have 6 layers/folds) over and over. It isn't actually that labor intensive to fold something 1000 times if you started with something like 7 layers.
>>

That’s it. I’m sick of all this “Masterwork Bastard Sword” bullshit that’s going on in the DaS3 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I’m talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that’s about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I’m pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That’s right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the daS 3 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:
(One-Handed Exotic Weapon) 1d12 Damage 19-20 x4 Crit +2 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork
(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon) 2d10 Damage 17-20 x4 Crit +5 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork
Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don’t you think?
tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in DaS 3, see my new stat block.

Confirmed for knowing shit all. There's a flexible core and a softer, sharper outside.

You just fold to get rid of imperfections.

They used every bit of ore they could because of the limited resources of an island nation.

ITT: Weebs and eurocucks who don't know what they're talking about.

Is the Katana shit? As a weapon in terms of performance? Absolutely. That's not up to debate, due to Japan's lack of iron resources, the blades would have a soft edge and a hard edge. European, Middle Eastern, Central Asian (and maybe Chinese) swords would be hard edge. Places in Europe had a lot of iron.

With that said, the Japanese sword is a well crafted weapon and it's beautiful. But it's not a good tool.

It probably did, actually.

Its not like rulers actually fight in battles they attend, so they bring their fancy shit to chill in the back with the generals.

I never played any souls game because my computer is too shit. Which is a shame because the architecture stuff is gorgeous, the mobs very imaginatively designed and the story is also great. Oh well.
