Dirt: Rally is a fairly recent one that's a ton of fun. Obviously it's rally racing, and it's pretty realistic and unforgiving at times but it's some of the most satisfying racing I've ever played

You should check out Split/Second, it is nearly 6 years old but it is one of the most creative racing games I have ever played.

NFS Carbon is decent enough, more so if you've already played U2 and MW.
Trackmania Turbo is okay I guess.
If you can emulate, NFS Nitro for the Wii is somewhat a Ridge Racer game. Really fun and looks great.

DiRT Rally is a Simulation Game. If you like the idea of driving real car full speed on dirt and throwing it left and right like a mad man, you'll like it. Just get some time to learn the new driving aspect of it.
The game is a good game and is worth his normal price. It's also I think the new reference for Rally Simulation. May not be the absolute best physic wise, but the rest will easily make for it.
