Framerate is still ass on few ocassions, specially when a Ranger goes nuts and starts destroying every fucking building nearby.
Still, best game on PS4. And online is pretty alive. Do it.

This was the first game I got for PS4
Its fun, runs better than what I saw of the PS3 version, has improved characters and weapons.
The only time it ever seemed slow was during one of the new missions added to it, but then it was full of giant monsters and robots.
The Online is alright, sometimes its a bit hard to get games at your character level, sometimes hard to get games on missions you've not done.
You know, unless you can host.
UK version, NA version online might be different.

So far, I'm finding it a little boring, maybe the formula is starting to get stale for me, dunno.

Can someone explain the appeal of the series? It's always looked like one of those games you get on a demo disc that crashes within a minute of starting up to me. Is it the clunkiness that makes it charming?

I didn't play 2017 so I can't compare, but 4.1 has like 90 missions in the base game and four classes with completely different styles and weapons.

Rangers get Guns n Missiles, have a dodge roll and can pilot vehicles.
Wing Divers get Lasers and shit and can Fly. Have low armor. Great for looting stuff for team mates.
Air Raiders get a shitty grenade launcher and placement weapons, the ability to call in air strikes, and the ability to call in vehicles, and have a weapon that lets them speed up lock ons
Fencers get Artilary or Melee weapons and shields, have max armor but are slow as shit. They have a tech dash thing to make up for it though.
I've played all the classes, Wing Diver is the most fun, but they are all fun.
Air Raider and Fencers are hard to use solo.
Still waiting for the PC version.

I only played Vita version, so dunno about the X360 one, but:

Controls better, change weapons with R1 instead of circle, Zoom with L1 instead of triangle, you can reload weapons anytime instead of having to empty it, it has IIRC ~80 missions offline, ~96 online, some of them are taken from 2017 (very few one, like the missions INFERNO and STARSHIP are the mission 39 or 40), several new enemies likeFUCKING DRAGONSandBEEEES, really wasps, lots of shit to collect due to having 4 classes, 2 DLC packs (one is free, another is tough as nails but gives great easy loot).
Fucking next EDF needs scorpions and mantis.

Rangers are the most versatile class, with Machine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, Rocket launchers, explosives, grenade launchers, lock-on missiles, flamethrowers, and insanely powerful energy weapons that can't be reloaded.
Wing divers have energy weapons. Close range spray lasers, medium-range focused beams, long-range sniper lasers, particle guns with all sorts of firing patterns, semi-homing lightning guns, plasma grenades and cannons, and crazy homing psy-guns. They're squishy, but can fly. Balancing your energy use between your jetpack and your guns is a must.
Air Raider is generally meant to be a defensive or support class with placeable turrets and mines, and the ability to call in air strikes and vehicles. His only guns are remote-detonated sticky grenade launchers and laser designators that speed up missile lock-on for other players.
Fencers are strong, slow and tough, with melee weapons, shields and heavy artillery. Tough to handle, but you'll be a god if you can work it out.
