The story is pretty good.
There is one major reason I like it, multiplayer. It had some of the most fun multiplayer games and gave birth to Gary's Mod.
Also who the hell cares it is linear?
I constantly see "X game fell for the open world meme! It sucks!".
Half-Life is the "original" organic grassroots experience with some actual soul to it, and everything after it (including HL2) as just corporate cash grabs.

A few years ago the market was saturated with AAA brown&bloom linear trough.
Now the market is over-saturated with indie "survival" shovelware jumping the Minecraft/DayZ bandwagon. Either that, or the flood of AAA sandbox eswhere the major gameplay element seems to be climbing observation towers and collecting random shit shit.
The real problem is that the popular games don't do middlegroud anymore. It's either completely pointless "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" open world, or your standard corridor-setpiece-corridor Cowaduty shooter.

most people dont really get the "its the citizen kane of" thing, when citizen kane came out it blew other movies out of the water, it introduced all sort of elements to the industry that are still used to this day, it was ground breaking at the time.
