4k isn't overkill. Once you switch to 4k you'll notice how much better it is.
The principle problem however with 4k is A) Microsoft have absolutely terrible scaling support for wangblows and B) You need a more powerful GPU if you want to render stuff at native.

for gaming its a bit overkill because as the monitor size increases its harder to track the monitor from close proximity. so unless you use controllers and sit back, bigger monitor isnt necessarily better. also fps makes more difference compared to resolution for me. higher the fps better the game with the lowest resolution 1080p.
