The awfulness of Graces' (especially the Future Arc) plot can't be overstated, but neither can the quality of it's battle system.
Senel Coolidge is a giant nerd and the best protag.

Only a few one has this as a theme. I mean Tales of the Abyss is almost the opposite of this.
Tale's has never been popular because of the story. It's usually the character interactions and gameplay.

Phantasia - Arche
Eternia - Meredy
Destiny - Chelsea
Symphonia - Colette, deal with it. She's cute and the animation made her even better.
Graces - In order, Pascal > Sophie > Hubert.
Destiny 2 - Harold.
Xillia 1 and 2 - Milla.
Vesperia - Rita.
Hearts - Berryl
Fuck tempest.
Zestiria - Rose
Innocence - Hermana
Rebirth wasn't bad, but I didn't feel much for the characters.

I would say xillia is my biggest disappointment. The soundtrack feels very under done. You could argue its all reserved, but I see it as completely unfinished and that assumption is only reinforced by the English va sounding like she had in her retainer and gave her lines from under a cardboard box. The cheap love subplot never gets off the ground and does not provide enough content to even remotely suggest a bond between milla and the beta male. And Jude having no ability to talk to his father like a god damn human being? This whole fuckin game was cringe. And teapo of fucking for the love of god that thing fucking sucked. I would rank Vesperia best. Symphonia. Legendia. In that order.

The dungeons themselves are terrible in Zestiria. Layout is generally just corridors with monsters strewn in. Like >>334894779 said though the music for four of the dungeons is pretty good. The dungeon layout is probably a little bit better than Xillia, but only just barely.

There's also the merging of Team Symphonia and Team Destiny, followed by the closing of Namco Tales Studio and absorption into Namdai proper, and then the layoffs, which all happened sometime after Graces. Which I'd say is the point things really started to decline, Hearts and Graces were still alright.

I mean yeah some of the charzcters' more cartoonist traits get satirized in some skits and scenes but for the most part most of the characters are poorly written cliches played completely straight, and that shit just doesn't work
As for your comment on skits, I have to disagree. The only skits worth shit were the Mask of Verona or whatever it was called and I can't think of a single redeeming thing about Sophie, Assbel or Cheria. I guess I can see warming up to Hubert, and like I said Malik and Pascal were alright. Not mentioning Richard because he is a fucking travesty of a plot device until the f arc where he's kind of okay I guess
