It absolutely does. SMT4 was my entrypoint into the series and I went in expecting nothing but a mildly hard, yet ultimately mediocre RPG. Completely blown away by the visual design and soundtrack.

Probably. There's nothing wrong with taking your time, but just know that you experienced not even 5% of the game's content. You'll get anywhere between 30-50 hours out of IV easily.

If you didn't really like the game and it what you saw up until that point I can't imagine it will do much to change your mind after you get out of Naraku But yeah I personally think it gets better and the story continues to get more interesting beyond that point but prepare for the worst overworld map in all of videogames if you ever do decide to continue.
