it is entirely possible, the problem is that you cant do it with large weapons because they dont attack fast enough nor do you have the stamina to spam them as much. Straight swords arent just OP due to decent damage, they are OP because they can be swung like 6-9 times in a row with the right amount of stamina and this is what is needed to stunlock/kill most of the more dangerous enemies. Trying this shit with a larger weapon results in the enemy recovering between attacks and fucking ruining your anus before you can roll away because your attacks are too slow.

Yup. It's a fairly good sorta-bread-and-butter type weapon. Great moveset, good damage that scales well throughout the game, etc.
I personally think it's a better idea to play around with each weapon you find to see if it's got something to suit you better, but if you honestly built a reliance towards the longsword, it's not such a bad thing since it's definitely a great weapon that will see you all the way through the run.
Personally, I always end up using the Bastard Sword for my first run through the games. Kinda a tradition at this point. I just really like the sweeping opener and its range.

The dark sword is only acquired by fucking farming the rather difficult to kill dickwraiths either before the abyss watcher fight, or in lothric, and is a solid as fuck straight sword you can use throughout the game, also it actually has a unique animation set at least for its heavy attack making it more interesting than just using the same 5 or 6 reskinned longswords. Finally youd be hard pressed to find anything else without farming up to that point as most of the more exotic weapons are much further into the game.

I'd like to do this but the weapon upgrade system makes this realistically impossible. At the end of my first playthrough I managed to get 3 weapons to +10 and a boss weapon to +5, decent I guess but I would like to experiment more. Alas I guess that's what new playthroughs are for.

BKG starts with 185 fucking damge when Astora Greatsword starts with 122.

You're inferring something that I never implied. I gave one specific case. Motors are OP in the world of bicycles, which is why the analogy fits well, the only difference is that the rule prohibit them, even then they were still used.

If you want to play this like it's Diablo, min-maxing every little thing you can so you can do the maximum amount of damage possible and be near invincible, go right ahead. It's weapon art is useless, and Astora Greatsword can be infused with lighting to make it godlike on faith build.
Black Knight Greatsword is only good because it can be swung fast, it may as well be a longsword with better reach. But let me tell you, they also don't get the poise benefits of using such a big weapon because the attack isn't heavy enough, defeating the purpose of such a huge weapon.
I guess sit's good for pure strength builds, maybe the best weapon in fact, but Astora Greatsword is better for anything else.

Refined Longsword is really good. Been playing the whole game with a Longsword and a longbow.
Lothric has better R2 with a stab followed with a stab instead of a slash.
If I went pure Dex I would be using the estoc or rapier though.

If you want to minmax then sure. Straight swords will give you the best of everything. Really high damage, high dps, low weight, low stamina use, buffable, and decent range. However if you're not a tryhard, play whatever you want. It's not like straight swords are so much better than other weapon classes that you won't be able to win against another player using them.

Faith as offensive is just outright awful cause lightning spells scale like shit.
Sorcery is awful until you get very late game (like 70+) because intelligence spells scale like shit until Soul Beam/Crystal Soul Spear and 50 intelligence. Also you need to equip a bunch of rings and minmax like a mofo to get respectable damage outta it.
Pyromancy starts off decent as a quite a few thing early game have a fire weakness and doesn't take minmaxing dickery to do damage,and you get it's good spells aroud early-mid game. It's also the best for PvP due to versitality with freeaiming spells and quick casting.
