He goes from being a scared kid that barely was able to survive the arrow to a courageous and selfless hero. Since stands are manifestations of one's personality/emotions/whatever Koichi drastically changes so Echoes does too as a result

I liked 5 quite a bit, it was a nice break from the "good v evil" theme, and most of what made 5 great carried over to 6 and 7, flawed protag, wacky stands, better applied camp
5 was also the first part in which, I felt, the characters were in constant and real danger. The first interactions with Kira andshigeki's deathwere an early taste of that but it was a ever-present theme in 5

I can go through tons of fiction and point out that almost every single characters victory was an asspull.
Luke blew up the Death Star because Han changed his mind and comes in for the last minute save.
Hell, the entirety of JoJo is asspulls. Don't even say "Well part 4 wasn't." Because it was. Okuyasu finally wakes up and swipes Stray Cat away from Killer Queen and Kira gets rekt by Crazy Diamond because Kira can't into hand to hand.
It's like the entire concept of thematics goes soaring over your head and you don't realize that beating Diavolo and King Crimson isn't just a matter of physically beating them, it's a matter of Giorno and the person that he wanted to be. A shining beacon, a ray of light that people could look to and find inspiration in and become better.
Girono was the light shining down on the shadowy Diavolo. King Crimson was all about erasing, Gold Experience was creation. The writing was on the wall the second that this dynamic was known, but it's still called an asspull because it wasn't dramatic enough for people or something

It's pretty good. Mista, Bruno and Narancia are all great characters, and there's a bunch of really hype fights. Also picks up a lot about half way through.
On the negative side, the pacing kinda drags here and there, many characters are underdeveloped although this is classic Araki, and the ending/conclusion is probably the weakest of the series. Giorno is also probably my least favorite JoJo on account of him doing jack shit most of the time.

A fair amount has to do with me disliking Josuke. The three characters that I particularly liked in part 4 were Kira, Koichi, and Rohan. Overall though , I really don't like Josuke, it just feels like he's an awful person to everyone and just uses people to his own ends. Giorno would work as contrast in that he also uses people but is nicer to his friends.
Aside from that though, I also don't like how a lot of part 4 doesn't play into the plot. I tend to prefer my SoL as more of an Ippo thing were there are fun times thrown about but they usually are during (or lead into) something important. Part 4, in contrast, has a lot of things that just never really matter, like Tonio I love his chapters but all he really does is stand in the background a couple times. The worst instance (to me) though would have to be with the return of Joseph. RHCP takes up maybe the first third of part 4 (if I remember right) and the ending bit of that is all about saving Joseph. Despite this the one thing that Joseph does in part 4 is save an invisible baby.
This all isn't to say that I didn't like part 4, I did, it's just my least favorite in the series.

Which is a problem with Araki wanting to do something more thematic. Giorno was suppose to be the light for the gang and they were suppose to grow because of it and they did really well. Girono grows just a tiny little bit and that's in the White Album fight, when his cool facade fades and he realizes that he could really fucking die and he makes a very rash decision that almost costs him and Mista their lives without accomplishing anything. Mista is the one that pulls the situation together and Girono realizes there is more to being a leader then just making good decisions. It's also about being an inspiration and shining like the sun to light the path forward. Even if you can't make one yourself, someone else might make one instead. That's part of having determination/resolve.
He goes from coming in at the last second for a save and acting cool, to more just support. Like when he helped Mista to make a way to get to Chocolata or when he was actively encouraging Narancia.

No, I agree with you that he's weak in that regard, but I liked him for it in a weird way. I guess it's because I hate when you have the "main character" and it's always expected for them to save the day and have the main focus of the story and then everyone else gets left the fuck behind because why cover anyone else? They aren't "the main character". So I liked it that Girono was just this support so that everyone else could grow. I liked that he was this polar opposite of Diavolo, who wanted to rule the world from the Shadows. No, Girono didn't care about expanding, he wanted to take control of the gang to make life better for everyone and wanted to be the face of it, out there for everyone to see. So finally at the end, after everyones had their moments, they have grown and then it all comes back to Girono and when he's there holding the arrow everyone knows they did their part. They weren't just sitting on the sidelines waiting for Girono to win, they were still doing things. Girono had inspired them and for it, Girono was given the means to defeat Diavolo. Funny that actually defeating Diavolo was more of a formality. Girono won the second the arrow was in his hand. Diavolo was completely shattered, he so believed that fate was on his side that when he saw Girono rise with the arrow, he was shitting himself and was going to run, until Trish called him out on it. At that point, he was no longer the boss, even with King Crimson, he would never command the respect and fear he once had if it was known that he had run from a 15 year old newbie.
That's why I loved part 5's ending so much. It brought a close to the villain not just by killing him, it broke him. Everything that he ever had known and believed was taken from him and then gave him the most amazing punishment. He got what he wanted, he will never be known, but he will never reach reality.
It's probably for this reason that part 5 is really loved in Japan.
