Professional players of both games agree that Dota is the better and deeper game, professional LoL players have even gone on record admitting it's too hard for them.
Also Dota has pick/ban statistics and winrate statistics (based on side of the map, gold/xp differences at difference times, etc) that prove the game is more balanced.
LoL has its appeals, but there's really no question about which game is "better" in the big picture.

It's an easy game to kick back with and play a match or two to relax. Especially with custom games enabled. You remember War3? Everybody just fucked around and did what they pleased? It's like that. Dota is the better game while LoL has a MUCH better matchmaking system and game modes.
Valve only patches Dota like 2 times a year, so you're stuck to play against the current OP heroes of 6 months without being able to do anything against it. Every game these heroes will always be picked because they're blatantly OP.
While in LoL if some heroes are OP you can actually ban them so you don't have to see theme every single game.

LoL champs are made for a specific role and their kit plays around that, however having a role doesn't mean being exactly the same, that's like saying all rock music is the same or all drama movies are the same. Also in LoL counters do exist but they do not always decide the matchup because the game is heavily decided on teamplay and counterplay

I didn't know what your definition of samey was. But yeah some champions are meant to fill a role so they do the same stuff that the ones in that role, but I mean Illaoi and Darius are both in the same role but they are basically completely different characters in their kits lol. Also there are some exceptions, like Singed who plays pretty uniquely
