>>
Honestly I didn't mind Conviction that much, it had a bunch of dumb stuff but at least it had some sense of closure.

I was more annoyed at them deciding to make another game in the fucking series when Conviction very clearly finished it all up.
>>
>>334867220
It wasn't though. They tried something just a little different and it wasn't met with grand applause. They fixed things for the better with Blacklist, which I feel is what Conviction should have been. It seems like the next natural step.

>Is MGS V phantom pain a good filler for stealth games?
No. It's fun, but absolutely terrible if you're expecting an MGS game. With that being said, I played the fuck out of it. Get it cheap and you can easily drop 100+ hours

That's the stupidest thing I've seen in a while.
If it's optional, and you don't like it, then don't use it. Higher difficulty levels in Blacklist straight up disable it. I don't remember if its the same in Conviction.

Blacklist was a step forward in regards to alternate paths. It's a pity the stages were so linear despite the paths. The Bank and Cargo Ship in CT are the standard for Splinter Cell Level design imo.

>>334868421
Splinter Cell, PT & CT run exceptionally well on low end laptops in my experience. Drop some change during the next steam sale and risk it. Personally, I would say pick up a pre-owned ps2/xbox and play the first 3 before doing anything else.

I know it's the proper choice, but there are some folks that tend to prattle on about how it's "character breaking" which is nonsense.

The funny thing is, I had already played through the entirety of the first game without ever realizing it was fucked on my computer. Avoiding spotlights and things like that was a fucking nightmare. I thought the game was just insanely hard like that and you had to intuitively grasp where you could be seen even though there was meant to be obvious light all over.

Same here. The customisation plus higher difficulty levels let you tailor make the game.
Shotgun runs, Pistol runs, Sniper Rifle runs, Ghost runs, Knife runs and more.
Super enjoyable. I especially liked the uniform and goggle customisation that let you go from tank to ghost.
>>
>>334870605

It was better than Conviction (which isn't saying much) but until they completely get rid of Mark and Execute the series will never be as good as it was. Even if you play on higher difficulties where it isn't turned off most levels are designed around it with easy set-ups for silent take downs in new areas just so you can use that feature soon after.

Ehhh
I'd say Blacklist's strongest aspect was that it was designed with both assault and sneaking in mind so that while mark and execute does help, it is never necessary if you are doing a full stealth playthrough. I played on realism, or whatever the hardest difficulty was, without it and I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

>>
>>334878003
Last post then.
Yes and no. At least, for me the answer is yes and no. They don't pay for good reviews, they pay for news coverage and will direct views to you/your site.

If they straight up paid a company or a site, then someone, somewhere would have let something slip by now. Common misconception is that there's some grand conspiracy at play, but it's more akin to many small agreements working in tandem.

Look at something like Gears of War Judgement. It was mechanically sound and worked perfectly fine. But the story, characters, level design, weapons and forced horde portions are all bad. Despite that, the game got great scores. Why? Because nobody that scored the game well mentioned those things in any meaningful way. If you can spin a negative into a positive, then you're doing it right.

In short, what you read is true, but how it happens is different from what you read.

Goodnight anon's. Good thread.

sometimes i feel like that book inspired the storyline for conviction. not that they were very similar but including his daughter in the whole thing. i wonder if that book is what ruined the game series. the daughter of the us military's greatest physical asset getting kidnapped doesn't seem very realistic to me...but it sounds exactly like the kind of bullshit ubisoft would put in a game.

>>
>>334883386
Depends on the level. Some of them are about using shadows while some are just hiding behind cover (mainly the early levels set during the day).

As far as I know, the stealth detection algorithm is pretty complex, at least on the same level as CT.
>>
>>334883826
I don't think it's that complex. If the light is green, you're pretty safe. if the light is red, you're not.
>>
>>334883536
Because Assassin's Creed was LITERALLY the exact same game. Seriously, read up on it.

>>334883426
The mandatory assault sections were balls, but the rest of the gameplay is pretty solid.

>>334883386
It takes a bit more thinking than going cover to cover, but the same can be said of all Splinter Cells, just waiting until the guard turns around and leaves...

>>334883653
Gameplay wise, it is much better. Don't get me wrong, the first game is fucking fantastic. But it's sluggish and, I know I'm going to get shit for this, outdated.

>>334883826
>stealth detection algorithm
Nigga... I love the game, but it's literally raycasting. Are you within the line of sight and distance that is programmed in? Are you in the dark, which lowers those parameters? Etc. it's not rocket science or complex.
>>
>>334882027

Alpha Protocol.
>>
>let's have our A team develop the non-canonical good game on dying platforms while we have our shitty B team develop the shitty canonical game on next gen platforms

>>
>>334883386
Mobility is a big fucking deal, as is speed. Guard patrols cover most of an arena, and dogs will ruin your day unless you KO/kill them. Typical strategy is to move quickly along the path of least resistance, using CQC to take out problematic guards, and gadgets to force openings. Alarms and minor disturbances are punished more harshly here than in any other CT game, so it's better to kill a guard than have an alarm raised.

>it's just going cover to cover
CtC's advantage is that you're moving at full run speed with the noise of a crouched run. CtC's disadvantage is that you're locked to a certain path, angle, and speed. I avoid CtC when I play as moving quickly is too risky unless you've cleared the area, at which point a full run is plain better.

>waiting for enemies to just leave the room entirely
Not happening in the vast majority of rooms.

>>334883536
HoboSam depended on the game being scavenge-driven, and the necessary rework meant cutting down on complicated features like that.
>>
>>334884348
gameplay-wise, blacklist is barely a splinter cell game. the sluggish feeling was GOOD in the old games because it made you feel like a real, human spy who was drastically outnumbered, rather than a supersoldier who could break out into jason bourne mode whenever you needed to.
>>
>>334884348
>Because Assassin's Creed was LITERALLY the exact same game. Seriously, read up on it.
I wouldn't say that. They were promising a lot more environmental interaction than AC, and multiple sneaking locations, a bit like what was promised with MGSV.
>>
>>334882197
he really does, the story didn't even take advantage of the change, making the change pointless. Sam could already do amazing feats at his older age so that excuse they made Ironside say about this new sam not matching his voice because he moves more goes out the window and they could've just hired a mocap solely for his body because that excuses makes no sense, if the actor is older and so is the character then he shouldn't be able to do more crazy stunts like he used to, probably would actually do less stuff, but again they could have mocap per his body without changing the va like they did before in conviction and possible the previous titles, not to mention ubisoft keeps ignoring his Benjamin button condition of getting older but looking younger.
>lasers? Lasers are so...

ubisoft has had many chances of introducing new protagonist or even a spin off and retiring sam or make him the new Lambert, in VT with Bob and steve(not their official names) the archer and kestrel and the double agents last gen Co op, next gen da new guy that gets killed on the first mission, the guys that help you in CT, and now the black dude from blacklist, and possibly Sam's daughter taking on the mantle if they wanted to, I doubt Sam would like that but it would make for some great banter between the two if Sam is the new Lambert, and would make that flashback from conviction with kid Sarah fit nicely.
hearing Sam talking to his daughter through the phone in blacklist was weird, sounded like her older brother than her dad.
>>
>>334884637
Also one nice thing they promised is that you could pick up almost any object and use it. They apparently even bothered to animate Sam's hands properly for every object.

Then they threw all that out. It's certainly a more interesting looking game than what we got.
>>
>>334884585
Nah it was bollocks

Because it'd be sluggish and fuck and then sam would do a superhuman jump and splits up a wall to avoid a guard

didn't mesh at all
>>
>>334883602
not really a Splinter Cell but it's an obvious nod to it, it's the mission where you go solo on an oil area I think and another dude sneaks around with you, it's on Vegas 2 I think.

I think Ubisoft wants to start ignoring the timeline, which is fine since it's fucked up now anyway and nobody plays SC for the story.

I don't want a new character 2bh, just freeze Sam and call it a day, games have the benefit of being able to do that. I can pretend the newest games are in an alternate universe or something.
>>
>>334873463

>>
>>334884585
What exactly makes a Splinter Cell game?? And really Sam has always been cream of the crop. He was 18 when he went through Seal training, served for a long ass time, went into retirement and STILL did all the crazy shit depicted in SC1. Also, good luck going Jason Bourne head on into a group of dudes. You die in 3 shots on realistic.

>>334884637
Sort of. I honestly have no idea why they went in the opposite direction with the game. Like... It makes no logical sense.
>>
>>334884783
the split jump isn't superhuman, anyone can do that if they are in good shape. it was also just a gimmick for the trailers, there was only one part of the game where you needed it. i'm talking about the conviction-esque shooting controls that feel completely out of place in a spy game.

they're all right.

I think the one where he had to take out some sort of Big Bertha nuke cannon. it's pretty stupid, yeah, but the books are written like an imperfect playthrough. He wants to do stealth all the time but sometimes he has to fight through some alarms and uses up all his equipment to get out by the skin of his teeth.

I can't remember much about any weird things, the books are pretty much on par with what Sam Fisher does in the games.

i said good shape not decent. you can maintain an athletic body well into your 50s if you train as hard as a SEAL does.

obviously you have to use cover, you don't just jump out and start spraying. but in the old games you couldn't play it like a cover shooter, you had to aim carefully because you only had about 60 bullets in your assault rifle.
>>
>>334885368
Fuck you.

Sam should've stopped being an operative after chaos theory and retired or become a handler for a new protagonist. It would make a lot more sense than this complete fucking rewrite / reverse aging garbage they have going now.

I liked the newer games in terms of gameplay, for the most part, but the atmosphere is all gone. It turned from a comfy stealth game with banter between handlers into a shallow action movie plot.

Grim is a fucking geek, not some badass gunslinger guuuurl

>>334885193
if they're going to change the voice they might as well start with a new character, conviction wrapped up Sam's story nicely, he saved the president, saved his daughter, saved his friend, got his charges dropped, one nice bow.
then BOOM, VOICE CHANGE, YOUNGER SAM, 4TH ECHELON
All this new stuff at once and everything feels like a spin off but it's not because the protagonists is still called Sam Fisher.
don't get me wrong I don't dislike the new va, I just would've preferred for him to be a new character passing the torch instead of ubisoft telling me this guy is Sam fisher when he clearly isn't
freezing his age? I'd be fine with that if they at least put rules to it and stick to them, not keep changing it or ignoring it. story might not be the biggest focus for these games but continuity still needs to exists, I'm not talking strictly story continuity, but for character, setting, rules etc.
no matter how ridiculous these rules are they will makes sense in the world they are set on as long as you stick to them and not copping put.
sorry for the long post
