Horus Heresy should be left as a separate Dawn of War game, honestly. It was such a big event it would have to be scaled up to Total War sized fights so it would make Titans an appropriate addition to DoW:30k. I want more Bloody Magpies to fuck around with both the Black Legion and Thousand Sons.

Jesus christ, every fucking time with you fucks. This doesn't fucking work with the lore of 40k, only as an RTS. 30k especially would make no sense with basebuilding since so much of it is based on final stands or making impossible assaults without support. If you don't give a damn about a lore perspective interfering with gameplay then a SupCom style would be best. If you do care then a Total War style would make more sense.

IG have probably one of the easiest times vs Crons in SS. Maybe Eldar because early game banshees is basically instant-loss for Crons.

Anyways, you don't need barracks as IG. You can make your standard infantry right from your base and Commissars don't come into their own until t2. Get you GL spam up as early as possible and Necrons have no fucking shot at fucking with you. Won't even be able to get up to fire at you.
If they're in your base then all the easier. Garrison your structures and now they suddenly need anti-building if they want a chance at a successful attack.
Garrison your tech priests. They go from shooting worthless las pistols to somehow shitting out plasma bolts when they're in a building.

Necrons and SoB are the worst armies around in SS. IG are up there right under Tau/Elfdar.
Of course this is all in relation to 1v1s. Necrons are actually perfectly reasonable in larger skirmishes when they have someone to back up their slow start.

If you're playing DC then disregard all this shit. DC Necrons are fucked and you're fucked too.

>buggy/unresponsive UI
>no wargame style overmap

>splitting the releases

I feel like the core gameplay is solid but THQ wasn't in any position to fund it properly.

Most people's have problems when matched against Crons because they try to fight them like they're SM or CSM and don't play against their weaknesses enough. Their reliance on scarabs for control points means you can basically run circles around them.
>>
>>334860547
GL spam is when you load up 2-3 squads with grenade launchers. The knockback ability on enemy infantry is like tossing salad, they'll barely be able to recover before being thrown up into the air again.

SS isn't buggy on the current patch. It was undoubtably a problem on release but by now the only reason left to play DC is for the campaign. SS is better supported, with a larger community, and miles ahead of DC in balance. The campaign in DC is much better but if you want to actually play the game you go on SS.

And yes. Necrons were broken as shit in DC. Then they nerfed them but buffed the shit out of Flayed Ones and they were STILL OP as shit in DC. Now in SS they have a pretty massive flaw with their slow expansion that makes their free early-game heavy infantry much more reasonable.

GL is grenade launchers. It's IG's early game armory upgrade.
You don't need barracks as IG until t2 unless you're thirsty for a command squad. Which is fair enough; psykers in some MUs are absolutely invaluable t1. However, if you find yourself not needing the command squad, the only thing barracks give you until t2 is access to Commissars. Commissars are not that great for their passive morale buff. Commissars are MONSTERS because of their t2 ability to execute a guardsmen, making all nearby squads IMMUNE to morale damage and giving them a massive buff to attack speed. With 15 GLs firing twice as fast, you'll burn through any infantry option in t2.

On a separate note: people discount the plasma guns IG get too easily. They're great, too, for their own reasons. But that's a discussion for another day.

You gain access to GL t1 from building a Tactica Control. It also grants access to /very/ useful research upgrades to their infantry armor and morale, and later on an insanely strong upgrade to their attack range and number of specialist weapons per squad.

Baneblade is strongest on what terms? It's certainly a monster on the battlefield. But in terms of HP nothing beats Kauyon Greater Knarloc. In terms of damage I'm willing to bet Bloodthirster beats it out. In terms of raw usefulness Avatar cannot be challenged.
Baneblade has the VERY big weakness of being very slow to construct. It requires a very long and costly research; then building its own building that can ONLY make Baneblades, which runs the risk of having a Relic stolen from you as it's being built; then you need to actually produce the thing. It's very large and unwieldy on top of that and will often get stuck on all your infantry.
Most IG will prefer to build Lemun Russ because of this nine times out of ten. Lemun Russ is easily one of the strongest non-relic tanks in the game. Only Hammerhead really competes in my mind.

>>334861762
IMMUNE to morale, not even morale boost. Flamers instantly useless. On top of an insane attack steroid.
In lore terms, Commissars are supposed to be stuck behind IG. Put something scarier behind them than in front of them so they don't retreat. Mechanically, you pay 20 req to have all your squads turn into death machines.

Interesting, I have to try that out on some ez mode AI considering the first time I tried Imperial Guard I got bamboozled hard. From what I gather they seem like more ranged Orcs- throw out 800000000 of them, built giant ass turrets and make a fuckton of vehicles. Now that I know Soulstorm isn't buggy as sin i'll probably play that now.
Also that's fucked up. Do the Imperial Guards rebel against the Commisars, then? Shooting my friends wouldn't exactly engender myself to them.

Shooting a commissar is easily one of the most punishable things a guardsmen can do. It's the sort of thing that'll make the hammer of the Inquisition rain down from the fucking sky. You will be tortured in the most futuristic way possible.
Commissars are there to make sure guardsmen stay in line. They shoot cowards and execute people who want to rebel. When you're fighting reality-warping demons and undead robots from the birth of the universe it's easy to rout and fuck over your comrades. Without them the Imperial war machine would sort of screech to a hault outside of Kreig. Kreig guardsmen shoot their own cowardly commissars.
The life of a guardsmen is one of terrible misery and almost assured death. Your life and even soul are deemed an expendable commodity. Regular deaths of hundreds of thousands of guardsmen is considered a very simple acceptable loss. The best you can hope for is that it's a quick death at the hands of your commanding officer rather than captured by marauding torture circuses or daemon-worshipping heretics.

Actually the best thing you can hope for is assimilation by the Tau, really.
>>
>>334864452

Or, you know, hope that your regiment takes so many casualties that its deemed to not even be worthwhile to merge it with another. In that case you get to stay on the world youre currently, which may or may not be a good thing.

Horus Heresy would kind of suck for a DoW game, unless it just avoided all major canon events - but in that case it might as well be set during the modern era so enemy variety could be increased.

Like seriously, most battles for the Space Marines were one sided slaughters going either way, or just loyalist forcesentrenching their position and trying to hold out for relief against waves of cultists, CM, and demons - usually ending in their failure.

The handful that weren't would just be awkward to adapt into the DoW formula, since even with 2's squad focused design it'd be shit for stuff like Roboute confronting demons and boarding CM on the hull of his ship solo in melee combat, Sanguinius 1v1ing that Bloodthirster fucker on Terra, etc.
>>
>>334864452

>It's the sort of thing that'll make the hammer of the Inquisition rain down from the fucking sky. You will be tortured in the most futuristic way possible.

Haha what? The Inquisition doesnt have the time to deal with every instance of a guard regiment getting pissed about their commissars. Thats for the Guard to deal with, no Inquisitor is gonna spend time on that. Penal legion or straight up execution will be the punishment, not inquisitorial retribution. If a regiment starts to worship Chaos or consort with ayyliums, THAT will bring the Inquisition to them.

>Shooting a commissar is easily one of the most punishable things a guardsmen can do. It's the sort of thing that'll make the hammer of the Inquisition rain down from the fucking sky

Not even close. With the massive wars the IG fight in it's impossible to tell just where exactly the shot that pulverized the Commisars face came from and no one will likely know it was guardsmen Jim and anyone who saw probably won't care in certain scenarios like when the Colonel is calling a full retreat but Commisar is being stubborn. Guardsmen from certain planets like Catachan do this all the fucking time and get away with it because they simply don't give a damn about the Commissariat. Regimes that behave that way are expected and Commisars sent to them are expected to use their power appropriate when working with such dangerous soldiers.

The Imperial Guard is more than capable of policing it's own soldiers and punishing insubordination.

Honestly if it gets played straight as a sign of chaos corruption slowly seeping into their ranks and not 'lol our geneseed is fucked yo' I could almost forgive that.

It'd be cool to see an active, popular chapter actually fall - especially if it grew out of legitimate issues they have with the Imperium, and it got developed.

Of course, that's asking too much of GW these days.

I will watch it on youtube. While I sometimes think that Abnett makes the 40k universe, at least in Gaunts Ghosts, a bit too... normal, I suppose is the word, the worlds he creates for Eisenhorn and Ravenor are very interesting and I want to see them get brought to life.

That's what I like about him. It's a refreshing take on the usual over-the-top approach to most 40k stuff. Things aren't black and white, even an organisation as absolute as the Inquisition has different factions, there are actual people living, not just cannon fodder and the usual chaos. I don't know, it made all the backstage believable whilst keeping the 40k threats very real.

In the context of Warhammer, having a Mary Sue makes sense considering everyone else is the exact opposite. Also not only is Sanguinius dead as hell, he also failed as a leader and his chapter is in dissaray without him. In modern terms he's an examination of the consequences of perfection- everyone leaned on him, and when he died he left everyone in a terrible situation.

Oh know, I dont mean it like that. I like that too. The parts in his books that explore normal life in the Imperium are great. Like the mutant bar in Xenos (which I really hope is in the game) that has what is basically techno music, dancers and hookers. Or the carnval in one of the short stories where you can gaze into the Eye (here just a pit with smoke machines and purple lights) and have your courage judged by an old man claiming to be a Marine. Those are great. What I'm referring to is mostly found in Ghosts.

Simply put, the whole crusade in those books, and the IG, come across as very normal, by 40k standars. Theres not a lot of commissars executing people for cowardice, not many chainsword wielding priests and I honestly cant remember if there were any Chaos Marines, Techpriests or Ogryns. Theres a few psykers, at least one Chaos Dreadnought and a few DE and a deamon at some point but that sabout it. Its mostly just humans vs humans and while thats to be expected (regular renegades and cultists do make up the bulk of Chaos forces after all) I feel they could use an increase of the more fantastical elements of 40k.

I dunno, maybe I'm talking bullshit here. Its been years since I read them, maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

That's nothing nearly so strong as to empower Slaanesh noticeably and likely has nothing to do with any heretical intentions or knowledge of Chaos. It'd be impossible to regulate that the same way it'd be impossible to make sure every single IG doesn't like killing things to much.

The kind of Pleasure you need to look out for is when the Planetary Governor has every single virgin on the planet taken into a giant arena and then charges the nobility thrones to watch him have his fun.

Last time I checked (and this could've changed) the Tau Empire is comprised of around a hundred worlds, most of them xenos. There are a few human populated worlds, some of which have been conquered and some of which more or less willingly joined and then were either never even contested or resisted Imperial invasion. Taros is an example.

>most human populations are "sterilized"

Its worth noting that its explictly stated, though it is heavily implied. I've been reading all region archive stuff in DC and it says that the Tau have controlled the world for quite a while. Its only after the (non canon) Tau victory after the Kronus War that the humans are sterilized. They pay a "heavy price for the so called Greater Good", as the narrator put it.

Speaking of the archives in DC:

>mfw that one region where some wanted dude is calling himself "Commissar Valiance" and executes a Tau on a stage in cold blood, inciting the human population to riot in the Tau Quarter of the city

Yes and it brings them great pleasure because of how it makes them FEEL. That's the point. Slaanesh is the pursuit of sensation in all forms. A Slaaneshi takes just as much joy in a small bit of a new sensation as they do in a massive dose of a familiar one. She embodies the pursuit of pleasure to it's greatest and smallest levels.

>Just because you penis feels funny and you are happy it happened doesn't mean you immediately fall and become a gibbering Slaaneshi cultist.
Yeah, no one said that. You don't fall to Khorne the moment you punch someone in anger, you don't fall to Nurgle after one bout of depression, you don't fall to Tzeencth after changing your computer password. That doesn't mean they aren't examples of their domains and related to the extreme ends of said domains.

By Dawn of War, do you mean just 1? If so, go straight to the expansions, they're all good IMO. Though you might want to take a trip to pcgaymingwiki.com for Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, since they, especially SS, had some rocky launches. Theres some mods and improvements there you might be interested in.

If you want something besides strategy, your options are more limited. Theres Space Marine, which lets you be a Muhreen and kill Orks and Chaos. Its good enough, Id say. Not great but it has a nice feel to, you look, sound and feel like a marine when playing. Just dont expect greatness from it.

Theres also Fire Warrior, if you get really desperate for something besides strategy but there a few factors to consider: its not great. Some have called it shit, I wouldnt go that far, but its absolutely a flawed, somehwat generic FPS. But I still have a soft spot for it and you might as wel. I dont think you can buy digitally though. You might find a torrent or something. And finally, it may or may not run on your computer, like it didnt for me.

Theres also the old Space Hulk games which I downloaded a while back. VAs a bit goofy at times and theres not much of a story but its pretty fun, though I havent played a lot of it.

And then theres Gothic Armada which comes out in like 2 days. And Deathwing, though we havent seen much of that.

Storm of Iron is a really good singleton standalone about the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists. Gaunt's Ghosts is the best Imperial Guard coverage that makes it seem like a ww2/vietnam war documentary and has lots of well written nuggets. The Ravenor/Eisenhorn series are both fantastic.

Basically anything before the Horus Heresy Series became the mainstay is really worth a read. The Horus Heresy series itself is quite alright but there's some boring reads tucked in here/there. Experiment!

>Word Bearers trilogy by Anthony Reynolds

The problem with the Word Bearers novels are the Word Bearers themselves. They are a bunch of fucking children. There was one funny exchange, though:

>MC is strapped to a rack and being horribly tortured by a Dark Eldar Homunculi
>hey what would happen if I die
>my boss would get mad at me, I guess
>tough luck then *snaps own neck*

Actually, the newest book included Harlequins. They wrote them as generic craftworlder eldar. Not single laugh or joke involved, it was all "stupid, ignorant mon'keigh" and "this Earth is more vile than Commorragh."

Probably the most disappointing BL book to date.

One more thing Anon: theres a thing called the "AI Skirmish mod" (I think thats the name) for DC and SS: what it basically does is it unfucks the ai, meaning that it will now upgrade its units, produce a lot more of them and generally be more aggressive. While I wouldnt recommend it for your firtst runs, it might be of interest to you later. It does fuck with the campaign movies, though theres a fix, at least for Soulstorm.

They generally give zero fucks about anyone non-eldar, focusing on their own survival and sense of humor. Some, like the Frozen Stars, enjoy slaughtering humans for kicks though.

No problem m8, I hope you have a good time!

I almost forgot something (yes, one more goddamn thing); theres this series of books called Imperial Armour. Basically campaign books with their own stories. The first few ones dont have any overarching story but in the third one (I think) the writers start trying to basically make little pieces of 40k history. They usually have some nice illustrations of troops, which are the main reasons I even downloaded them. Its always the Imperium vs Something but the enemy is usually changed up inbetween each book. They migh be of interest to you. I'm reasonably sure you can find a torrent for them

First a space marine
Then a custodes
Then an immortal superman with infinite regeneration powers called a Perpetual, of which there are only a few (<10 in the galaxy), Vulcan, the Emperor, and himself being notable ones. His history also sounds like a list of Assassins Creed settings. He was an Argonaut with Jason, fought at Verdun, and Austerlitz, and in the Gulf War. He's also the last Catholic in the universe.

At least he is still dead and never coming back as far as we know.

its more like they are parade soldiers and largely used for propaganda. The order militants kick some serious ass but its largely because they are pampered soldiers with expensive body armor.

Goddamn, there's a lot to WH40K isn't there?

Well I'll try my best to read as many books and finish as many games as I can.

One thing I never understood was the tabletop models.
>Why do they cost so much?
>You have to paint them yourself?
>you HAVE to order them online?
>people buy them?

I was actually thinking about getting just one or two just because they look cool, like amiibos, but do you actually have to paint them yourself?
>>
>>334877569
Not at all. Why would you think that? They're the glorious warrior women of the Emperor's Holy Ecclesiarchy and the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Hereticus. They make miracles happen wherever they go based on the sheer amount of faith in the Emperor they inspire in people.

>Why do they cost so much?
Poor business model on the companies part
>You have to paint them yourself?
Make and paint yes
>you HAVE to order them online?
Only if you don't have a Games Workshop or Hobby store near you
>people buy them?
Yes. Some for make and paint, some to play.
>>
>>334877782
>>Why do they cost so much?
GW management is literally insane and doesn't understand customer loyalty or long term business practices
>>You have to paint them yourself?
Yes, that is the best part of it. You're making your own unique army or models of your favorite dudes. The wargame is secondary. Unless you're a Tau player, probably.
>>you HAVE to order them online?
Only if you can't find what you want at your Hobby Shop or Game Store.
>>people buy them?
Yes.
>>
>>334876429
No, only dark eldar can be regenerated. Essentially, if their souls are strong enough to linger after death, they can feed on the pain and begin regenerating, even if all that remains is just a hand.
>>
>>334878094
Could always try to bring them back, but who knows how much interest that would garner. Hua Yuan was a big hit, and everyone got excited and went off making their own 'roll' threads, which exhausted tg. I'd give it a month or two before trying at one of these again

Heh, yeah there is a lot to this particular franchise.

>Why do they cost so much?

Money, money, money.

>You have to paint them yourself?

Yeah, its actually pretty fun. Time consuming and expensive (the paint aint free) but fun.

>you HAVE to order them online?

I dunno how it is in other countries but here (the New Caliphate of Sweden) there are still stores around that sell them. I do remember hearing something about GW doing some shit with their online store though.

>people buy them?

It is, unless something has changed since last I checked, one of the biggest tabletop games, yes.
