It's the best WoW clone on the market and offers most of anything WoW has to offer with more polish and support.
There's not really much else to say. The state of MMOs is pretty poor right now, and while I enjoy XIV I wouldn't really press people to play it. The game has a lot of its own issues beyond being a WoW clone, and while I think it is the best MMO available, I still don't think it's really a great game.

Either several months of crafting stuff to exchange for red scrips, or just buying some gear upgrades for 1-2 mil a pop
This will get you enough to attempt the highest level crafting, which will be locked to 3 crafts due to specialist stones

Gil mostly. I've RMTed about 150 million gil which, thanks to being on balmung, has netted me roughly $750.
Also I kinda find it fun. I skip a lot of the autism by just setting a crafting macro (Under user-macros in-game) which could get me a few levels a night by leaving an auto-mouse clicker to push the 3 buttons needed to run the macro.
I also have a FC house and I JUST made my 4th airship. But so far, getting 22-40 rank IV/V materia every day is pretty good.

Depends. Some servers still have houses free and take... I dunno, 3-4 weeks to get the gil.
The high population ones you'll have to buy from someone else which could tack on another 15-30 mil for a small house, which roughly makes it 4-6 times the price of what you'd have to pay. So, could take several months.
This is assuming casual play and not going full autismo crafting/gathering. In which case, maybe a month.

it's not that hard, I was able to craft these during 2.0 with like 900k, you spend most of your time with red scripts trying to get the gathering gear, but the crafting staff has a bunch of ways to get around it that isn't time gated, after I made it though I got bored and stopped crafting cause I didn't want to make the rest, I was poor as balls for a crafter too so I just didn't want to deal with it.
