What does /v/ think of the Skate series? I haven't really seen it brought up here.
It's funny how each iteration of the series drops in quality just a little bit, with the first being the best and the third being the worst.

I have only played the 3rd one, and I liked it so much I bought it.
Why is the 3rd one so bad, compared to the earlier ones?
Is it just a case of not enough new shit compared to the first one that brought a whole game's worth of new shit to the industry?
I only ever played the shitty Wii version where you do tricks on the Wii Fit board.
Naturally I preferred Tony Hawk over that.

APRIL 19, 2016, 5+ MONTHS LATER, WE HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE UPDATE ON THE PROGRESS OF SKATE 3 COMING TO THE PROGRAM.
MICROSOFT SAYS TALK TO EA, EA SAYS THEY HAVE NO CLUE, MICROSOFT THEN BANS ALL THREADS, COMMENTS, QUESTIONS, AND CONCERNS REGARDING SKATE 3.

Only reason 2 beats 1 out is because you can DLC the map of the OG skate park from the first game, and it has a bigger trick library.
3 was just trash. Why couldn't Jason Lee has been featured in the other two? I love Jason Lee.
3 was ruined by the shit city which was split into different areas and went a little too far in the "silly" direction. The first two had tighter cities. The great thing about Skate was finding a nice realistic spot and running it over and over again.

I like the first most because it doesn't feel like it has any interests other than being a solid skating game. You don't get off your board to make physics glitches happen, or send your character ragdolling, you stay on your board and you skate. Short and simple. You get to harder to reach spots by getting better.

They lost focus of what the series was about, being a semi-realistic skating game with its control scheme. It turned into a silly series, much like Tony Hawk (which everybody has already had enough of). They lost focus of delivering a solid skating game and instead focused on stupid shit like ragdoll physics and hall of meat.

i wish they'd remaster them for PC or current gen consoles. the framerates in skate 2 are all over the place, but it is undoubtedly my favourite of the 3

Skate 1 has the best map and is a great base. Still good to go back to.
Skate 2 makes the best additions by adding a shit ton of new tricks, as well as great online multiplayer. The map's not bad.
Skate 3 is disappointing but still okay. The map is bad, the soundtrack is awful, but it keeps the base gameplay so it's not all bad. Easily the weakest of the 3.
I wish Black Box wasn't dead so we might get a fourth, but that's not going to happen.

I never really got this thought.
TH and Skate play so different you can't really compare them other than "but they're both skateboarding".
There's no reason why you can't play both - TH for the arcade style of high-scoring combos, Skate for the more realistic approach of specific tricks and gaps.
I happily jump between THUG and Skate 1/2 constantly depending on what style of gameplay I'm into at that moment.

TH Proving Ground was underrated and was a step back in the right direction after Wasteland and Project 8 were kinda shit.

Change of focus from earlier games, less skating more hall of meat.
Awful map, made worse by being split up rather than open like previous games.
Split up the difficulty modes into Easy, 'Normal' (which actually isn't. it's closer to Easy) and Hardcore mode (supposedly Skate 1 physics) which was straight up broken.
Because of that, online is split up into the difficulties - majority of people play on Easy.
Worse online than 2.
Awful soundtrack.
Create-a-park is good but the framerate noticably drops while in one.
It's not a bad game, per se, it's just a let down.
Doesn't help that pewdiepie fags took over it.
Maybe on that point it's a good thing that Skate 4 won't be made, because it would cater to the pewdiepie audience.
If Skate 2 had one thing that was the most amazing upgrade above Skate 1, it was that there were actually a lot of things to do in free skate online with your buddies, kinda like the freeburn challenges in Burnout Paradise.
Simlutanous grinding, flipping over eachother, grabs over lips, Skate 2 had it all. Also the replay editor worked online yeah that was the shit. If only they thought of hooking it up to youtube back then.
i did finish all the missions in all the games, the races in 3 were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. I enjoyed Skate 2 the most.

Proving Ground has a lot of problems. It's for the best they ended it there. It lacked a lot of features from previous games, the additions didn't really do anything for me (all the dumb body checking shit), lackluster create-a-park in that dumb warehouse.
In terms of gameplay it's only really above Project 8. I wouldn't call it underrated.

THUG 2 on PC had Shrek playable.
And was actually amazing and had a lot of content inside. Shame American Wasteland had to shoehorn in really shitty BMX secions, it felt like nice progression from THUG2 to start building your own skatepark.

I liked the BMX in AW. I didn't like that it was forced, but I still appreciated it because it worked well. It was a nice option.

I remember that there was one mission near the Mall that required you to do a 360 flip to a tailslide.
Took me a week to notice the 360 flip put you in switch and reversed the input for the tailslide, going against what the game showed you on screen.

Again, I think this is a pretty shitty thing for Microsoft to do, but if you had at least done a 5 second google search into what you were buying, you wouldn't have this problem.

Skate 2 is really just a much improved version of 1.
The main advantage of 1 is the map, but they took some of the best areas like the community center and made them dlc for skate 2 anyway.
I mean, if you can get it super cheap or whatever then it's worth a look because it's still a solid game, but you're fine without.
