That's a bad excuse in this day and age. You get so much easy access to footage, feedback from other players and just information in general that it's difficult to make a really bad decision. You can also pirate the games or get refunds on steam.

It really isn't easy to determine what's good and what's shit when they all look the same, and reviews tend to be overly lenient on games because they're indie. AAA games usually get the opposite treatment where the standards bar is raised ridiculously high (usually proportionate to the amount of pre-release hype)
I think all games should be judged by the same criteria. More importantly, you should be able to play any game for 1 hour for free. The Steam refunds system can't even be used in this regard because if you refund too much, they threaten to block you. "Steam refunds are not meant for trying out games"
