I like the idea of mimics, it's just that there seems to be more of them than actual chests in daso3

Weapons are cool and bigger ones may emphatize that, but taking it to extremes looks very stupid.

This isn't related to one or other game, but to any, especially japanese ones, that uses this trope.

That last one would be hype as fuck, though. You find Anor Londo where it shouldn't be, everything is mostly normal sans some oddities and then suddenly, you are in the "underground" and the whole city begins moving, the disguise falling apart and you gotta kill it from within before you get completely dissolved.

I really hate how From handled Mimics in DS3, it feels like they forgot to put them in the game, and when they were developing Irithyl Dungeon they were like "oh shit we need to put mimics in the game!'' so they filled the place with Mimics, and then thats it.

They are supposed to be spread all over the game to keep the player in check, not 80% of them in the same area.

>actually had more fun finding stuff and being surprised since every Mimic or trap wasn't covered in bloodstains

Only thing I missed was people's Silhouettes running around and getting summoned to help people on bosses for EZ souls.

They gimped the message system, so when I finally got to play online it wasn't even noticeable.

I actually had this idea once:
>You are a Mimic
>You belong to the Mimicry Agency
>You are contracted by villains to eat adventurers who come to their homes/dungeons.
>You're running late and the Heroes are already in the Dungeon
>You have to sneak around them, Mimic any object, hide the real object, and devour your prey
>It's a time trial fast-paced game and when the Heroes spot you, you get graded based on what they can see/hear/sense as they come close to you
>Based on how good you did and what you Mimiced, you will get an animation of you coming out and devouring X adventurers/ get a sword in your torso and die.

You also can't really have a proper "Mimic" game with Multiplayer, cause the Player that isn't a Mimic would just hit everything anyway.

Not that hard to do, really. You could either impose some sort of taxing durability system, wherein striking random objects (especially MOST of the random objects) will quickly ruin your weapon. You need to go for killing blows against the living parts of the mimic's body to effectively win.

Alternatively, have objects be realistically destructible. If you have a short sword, you aren't going to get far with breaking crates, barrels, and other random objects with it, and especially not against chests or lockboxes.

So we have a wooden chest mimic. Swing your sword at it. A bit of wood is carved off, but it doesn't flinch. Open it, thinking you're safe, and OOPS, mimic'd. A proper mimic doesn't just jump up at the slightest hint of danger. It is stalwart and will wait for the time to strike.

Make it so that the adventurers are loot hungry bastards, hitting a chest destroys the loot, and that the party will start to disband since there isn't enough loot to be worth the trouble of the traps and monsters.

Wizard, Warrior, Thief party means three chances to hit the wrong chest before a loss, assuming they don't get munched.
