The trend I've seen is the ports are slowly getting better. The FFV port was not bad after you get used to the odd overworld sprites and the obvious touch screen design of the menus. FF9 is my favorite RPG, it broke convention at the time and tried to be like RPG's of the past (relatively)
none of the characters are dolled up like badasses, even though they totally end up being that way, the party, for the most part is a bunch of misfit losers, with Zidane the only one with any real destiny/power to him.
they make up for it, with Zidane literally being the strongest Protag without outside power in the entire series though.

Well, if they redrew them it wouldn't be a re-release of an old game, it would be a new release of a remade game. A port can be made with a handful of staff in less than 6 months. Think how many artists would have to put in a full shift to recreate all the models for the backgrounds. And since they will be rendering at 1080 or higher they will have to use modern lighting engines and shaders and such meaning render times will be pretty much the same as back in '99. The original FF9 was a $50 IIRC, you can take $10 off that for the Sony tax, but then you've got to sell as many copies at $40 as you did the first time round. On PC. Nope, it's clear that some team were given the nod to make a PC port of FF9 but they loved the source material so much they went above and beyond the call of duty.

I think the best feature this game has that should be revisited in future titles is the Active Time Event (ATE) system. Very good form of expanding the story as an option to the player.It pretty much makes reaching the end in less than 12 hours possible.

The only issue I have with this port is the backgrounds. The UI is a little jarring, but I got used to it.

I like Zidane he was a nice change of pace from the brooding edge lords that were Cloud and Squall. It made the scene with Garland after he discovers his origins all the better because it was the complete opposite of the Zidane you knew so far.
They went a little overboard on the cheery upbeat attitude with Tidus in FFX though.
This game had the best spell/ summon animations in the series

I got nothing against the out of battle menus really.
It's the in-battle ones I don't care for.
They're too big, I gotta hold down that UI hide button half the time to see things.
Also that damn sword fight at the beginning screwed me up half the time as I was used to seeing PSX button prompts and it was giving me 360 Controller ones.

It could be that he's dead yeah. Black mages are said to live about a year and in the cavern you can see that he is at least 6 months old at the beginning of the story. But him being special I assumed he would live longer

I use a 360 controller and it showed the correct symbols you must have been doing something wrong. They made that part so much easier. I struggled so much to get it to 100 on the PS1 but here I got it 3rd try

Cheats are somewhat annoying because it's pretty easy to activate some of them by mistake
But then it's not really like anything in FF9 is really challenging if you know what's coming, or even if you don't really. I'd actually recommend playing with cheats at this point to avoid a lot of the bullshit

One thing that strikes me is how good the localization was in IX. Compare it to the botched job of VII just a few years earlier. I don't remember much weird Engrish or jarring phrasing throughout IX, the way the characters speak is very believable and really helps immerse you in the story

I'm so used to handling a SNES controller that when I see "Press X" I press what is Y on a 360 controller instinctively. Or even sometimes A on the 360.

Playing the game in french I can vouch for that aswell, the localization was pretty good.
