except for meeting other players, of course
also why waste ressources on coding a multiplayer that they admit will only be used every ten billion years when two players happen to meet
why bother writing netcode for a feature that has such a low chance of ever being actually used
but I guess that's why their flight physics look like utter trash
gotta set your priorities, and who needs enjoyable spaceship dynamics in a game centered around deep space exploration anyway :^)

I have hopes of this game being any good. It looks like something that'll be faintly interesting for 6-8 hours, and then you realize that you've seen and done everything and all there's left is doing it again but with different colors for animals and planets.
That said, I do think a lot of people don't get what they're planning with multiplayer. It isn't about exploring with your friends.

Question /v/:

Why is "exploration" so fetishized in the gaming industry these days to the point where it takes priority over all other aspects of the game? What is the point of exploration for its own sake, if there is not also interesting things to do, people to meet, and stories to discover?

Why do people get so excited at the idea of walking / driving / flying around "exploring" if all there is to do is look at things and maybe shoot them if you're lucky?

I think it's tied to a lot of games going OPEN WORLD now also, and it needs to stop. Being able to go to a lot of different places is not exciting or cool in and of itself. Those places need to be interesting as well.
>>
>>334827671
>faintly interesting for 6-8 hours, and then you realize that you've seen and done everything

This.
They keep saying that it's difficult to demonstrate this game in 20 minutes but all they do is demo the game for 20 minutes.
There's literally no reason they can't show 6 hours of this game other than the fact that people would realize how shit it is.
>>
Remember all those talks over the years of you faggots harping on how there needs to be a space game about exploring worlds and fucking with alien animals? You cunts even said thatd make a cool Halo game, exploring a Halo ring. Now this game comes out and you faggots are tipping your fedoras while scoffing.

No to all of those? Fuck off, this game is nothing but a nice concept with no heart or creativity in depth. This is literally Minecraft in space with a few randomly generated quests/shit we have seen in games years ago that advertised the sake things "literally MILLIONS/BILLIONS/TRILLIONS of different experiences" but it's just virtually all boring generic shit. They even SAID planets with developed life will be as common as they are in our universe, ergo, fucking rare. Meaning most of the biomes will be boring flatlands with nothing.

so this game is going to look worst than Space Engine but have to buy the game with about the same amount of stuff to do and prolly not the greatest physics
>>
>>334824648
It is a tech demo.

The game is hardly more deep than Spore.

It features a survival system/collection system that many games have.

So the only thing to do in this game is fly around in small ships and visit planets that look slightly different.

And you could do that in Spore.

There is no depth to the survival and nothing we have not seen before. I would LOVE this game to be fantastic. But I think we all know that it will be boring.

How many times have we been right about a game not living up to expectations? How few games have ever overturned those suspicions?

Random generation is not very fun to look at though.

"Wow a cliff", "wow a cave" is only interesting for so long because the engine only generates them within certain perimeters. Because of the visuals, it'll likely be less interesting/varied to look at than Minecraft, and less interactive as well (if at all).

That's cool because random isn't the same thing as procedural.

The social bullshit isn't the problem it's the asshats who just kill everything they see.
Like every fucking multiplayer game is a PvP affair even when it doesn't have to be all the time cause everyone is super hostile

cause every time you see one I can garen-fucking-tee all he is going to try to do is kill you and wreck your shit.

>>

I find procedural generation more interesting if you can understand the set of rules making things the way they are, using enough examples

Well, NMS version of walking on alien worlds will be worth a constant visits to an ophthalmologist that's for sure.

So Minecraft lets you build a homebase and settle. NMS is focused on moving forward, not settling on a single planet.

Also it has incidental Multiplayer.

Overhyping the fuck out of it. They're marketing it as though it were a AAA game developed by tons of people, when it reality it's being developed by a team of 12 at an indie studio.

My only concern is that the gameplay will get stale.

It sounds like you'll be spending your time looking for fuel and mats to upgrade your suit to survive on planets that have better resources.

That's it.

If you could somehow customize your ship, make it bigger or something, it would be more interesting to me, I mean, why can't I fly one of those giant ass batteships in the gameplay videos?

Are you so fucking autistic

You can spend the entire game on a single planet if you like. Each one is to scale--they say it can take days or weeks to travel across the surface by foot, and that's in real time. And that's not even counting if the planet happens to have a subterranean network.

So yeah, the vague overaching narrative is get to the galacitc core, but the game isn't pestering you to. You can stay on a single planet, much like in minecraft you can stay in a single spot or biome and just mine around and explore deeper instead of wider.

There's nothing semantic about it. You either can build something or don't. It's either a true sandbox or a dev qurated theme park (whick NMS is).

This is a game where you need your own music playlist in the background, a seperate screen playing something to keep you entertained and some mods to fill the vast empty void.

Threadjacking like the faggot I am.

Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-mpm_47k6Q

You are welcome to enjoy No Man's Sky, but this game will be a better GAME to PLAY.

Reasons to buy:

>Singleplayer Rogue-like gameplay with persistent progression

>AAA-style visuals & sound and rock solid controls

>Captivating non-linear storytelling that perfectly fits the nature of a rogue-like

>In-depth upgrade and damage system
>1st and 3rd person action focus (no sim)
>VR-Support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
>Action Freeze: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPHYk7FUmuc

>Made in UE4, which scales insanely well on majority of existing PC hardware
>Full object destructibility: https://everspace-game.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/moving3.gif && http://i.imgur.com/VQT5mq7.gifv

>procedural generation for system generation, so each playthrough will land you in star systems that aren't quite the same
>think basically freelancer remade in UE4 with visuals, physics, destruction, all turned up to 12

Finally, original kickstarter trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN7MugzDLrQ

Which shows that a big part of the game's design is mostly complete. Most money from kickstarter went into content creation (finishing as well new expansion), some feature addition, and much more time into platform optimization (PC first, then XB1, and then PS4).

Alpha begins in a little over a week. You don't have to buy into the alpha or beta or even release (if that's your MO for games), but I'd like you to know that this game exists and is arguably a better candidate of your time over No Man's Sky.

What do (You) consider "exploring"? This?
>>334827798

Do you also think that it's a niche game?
>>
>>334827798
The problem with exploration is that it's something that it's always been there but the industry doesn't get it.

Ever played a game for the first time and had a childlike sense of wonder and thrill during the first hours?

Imagine a game that could do that during its whole lifespan. Think first playthroughs of Zelda, Souls games, WoW, Halo even. They do emphasize exploration, but everything you encounter has value not because of it something not seen before, but because it ties into the world. Via lore, gameplay mechanics or even aesthetics, these discoveries are meaningful because they have been carefully crafted in order to do so. They fit a purpose within the game's world, which is something procedural generation can't do as of now.

Procedural generation can't spawn complex or engaging stories, nor it can build interesting worlds, which makes having infinite possibilities kind of lame, since they are all inferior to a well crafted (human crafted) one.

I do believe in procedural generation, though. Refinement of algorithms can lead to overcoming these weaknesses. For example, I do enjoy Dwarf Fortress, because it bypasses mos of what I said.

Yes, but not the core of what you said:
>everything you encounter has value not because of it something not seen before, but because it ties into the world
In DF that happens because it's meaningful to you, the player. You make it meaningful, because the mechanics allow for it (and even demand it in some cases). That some dwarf is so good at making cheese that his hobby is making gilded cheese statues is both a funny detail and important knowledge.
But seeing 40 planets in NMS and knowing that the 41st planet has a cave with some semi-useful but actually generic resource in it, is none of those, and that makes exploration meaningless. Since that detail actually neither confers nor creates meaning.
