Weight and Balance are two separate though related things.
Look at this for example.
Which do you think would be easier to wield? The cannon with a tiny pistol grip, or the cannon with the long handle placed at a better point of balance that won't break your wrist when you try to carry it? They weigh the same, the balance is different.

Balance is the evenly distribution of the weight on a surface, and it is indispensable for a melee weapon like a blade to have a fair contact point in one of the extremes to balance out the weight of the weapon with the force applied from said extreme to mantain the poise of the user as well.
It serves no purpose to have a weapon that you can only swing once because of the lack of balance.
