SH1 is still my favorite. It has a perfect blend of terror and mindfuck. I consider its pacing and major locations, the whole town design included, to be superior than its sequels. The sound-design was already superb in 1999.
For me, it's 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > SM > > > the rest of the shit.

And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like DaemonTools Lite to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.

the "cult" was originally just bunch of Christians that'd adapted elements and rituals of the area's pagan natives. Just about every name and term you see mentioned in the games have a Biblical origin. Team-Silent studied their shit damn well.

I really like 4 because i don't have to walk around a big foggy empty town just to find a hospital/school that has 99/100 locked doors i have to go up to and press a button.
Plus i can roleplay by locking myself in my house and cutting off all forms of outside contact.
