Well, it's quite inconsequential in post-WotLK WoW. It does translate to a concrete advantage in vanilla/TBC, though, with far greater number of consumables being used and gold sinks like repair bills and flying skill being far more expensive in relation to the gold you're getting from standard play. I guess you could pay for getting carried but that possibility has always been a thing.
