Pure speculation on my part:
They shut it down because of the Movie and the new expansion. The movie will create alot of PR for WoW and Blizzard dont people to find f2p server when they search for WoW. Also a "classic" server that is not supported by Blizzard with thousands of players is bad PR on itself because it kinda implies that current WoW is not good.
