He can make the massive cathedral become small because after he loses his legs he actually manages to gain more ground and expand his kill zone.
Loran Darkbeast also punishes you for trying to get breathing space. And Rom the Vacuous Spider if you manage to fight him indoors. Good luck.
I feel that Bloodborne has the hardest bosses in all of souls because the bosses have area control. You can't just dodge out because the bosses try to take away your room. I mean they're not just wailing at you, they directly influence where you dodge and they keep you dancing to their beat. I guess that's superb enemy design.
Going back to my point about room to dodge, when you fight Orphan of Kos, the arena is massive. You can dodge left, right, forward and backward. He can always try to napalm you but you are unlikely to run out of room if you manipulate the boss' positioning enough.
With Laurence though, I feel that there is no foolproof way to dodge. You legit have to use i-frames at times, especially at the second phase. Many of his attacks last longer than the actual dodging animation as well. I can't recall the last time I had to sprint in fear of a boss because sprinting was actually doing more for me than dodging, and in a Souls game too.

If you summon Queen Killer you can easily get to 50% before he dies, sometimes more.
Even if you don't all you have to do is strafe around and watch out for charges.

Undead Giant is an asshole because he'll just randomly combo attacks into each other - smash, slice, that fucking piroutte that will 1-shot you if you haven't got 50 vit with the two health runes (which you should) - smash again.
There's no real pattern to it.

You weren't able to summon phantoms back when I played through the Defiled, and besides, if you you fought every boss in the series alone, it would still be the hardest by far. I've killed everything in the series, but the only boss whose moveset I truly had to understand and master completely was the Watchdog. There have been a few that got close though.

Like I said, you can strafe around at distance and never get hit provided you dodge his charge.
Of course if you use very short range weapons it's a nightmare but with decent range you can just bait out his 5 bite attack then hit once or twice and back off.
Or if you're feeling lucky the 4 lunges that he does (but never trying to go for a hit unless the 4th long lunge happens)

Yes I know what you're saying, and that's how I beat the boss, but that's really why I believe the boss is the hardest in the series. Because you actually have to strategize and execute that strategy to defeat it. I've killed every boss in the series by winging it really, just dealing with the situation as it arises, occasionally influencing their positioning, but nothing on the scale of Defiled Watchdog, where you need to know what you're doing against every thing it does.

I barely count Bed of Chaos as a boss fight. It's a shitty out-of-place obstacle course.
Also on my last playthrough I beat it first try, although that's including save/quitting after destroying each node. Just need to remember the pattern for jumping to the root and then be extra careful the left arm doesn't sweep you off when it draws back from the swing attack.
