The Prime games were the only Metroid games I had played until a couple of years ago when I got the VC release of this for $30. Gave it a try and loved it. I've since played Fusion and Zero Mission and loved them, too. It's a very different experience than Prime, but an excellently made game.

Super is a masterpiece of game and level design. I replay it once a year or so and the game still impresses. Once you learn some of the sequence-break friendly techniques likewall jumpingandthe mock ball, your play route just becomes whatever the fuck you feel like until the mid-late game.

The music is still haunting even after all these years. Every zone felt forboding and mysterious even after mastering the game and knowing exactly what's coming.
The SFX are pretty amazing as well. The cries of a melting Crocomire are still effective today.

they did create a proper emulator, on the n3ds, their only handheld system that can support it. it's easy to forget that the 3ds is 5 years old, and the n3ds is the first 3ds with an increase in performance power since that first model from 2011. it is not possible from a technical perspective to create an accurate emulator on 5 year old handheld technology, at least not to nintendo's standards. most people didn't even think it could be done on the n3ds
