A combination of newfags who don't know the meta and people summoning dark spirits thinking they are warriors of sunlight or whatever and trying to get to the next area.
Ive had some good duels in the area right before the final boss and some areas in NG+, so it does get better, though still an issue with the PVP currently (unlike the people who complain about getting ganked while PVPing in this games forest hunter covenant forest.)

I don't see anything wrong with DS3 dueling, but getting upset when someone doesn't follow your made-up rules is like having imaginary battles with your friends as a kid and then getting upset when you cast a fireball at your friend but that fucker acts like it missed him. I've found a few who don't, but usually I find a 1v1 and think it's going to be a duel and they summon some phantoms.
The general consensus is, if invading, chug if host chugs, if invaded, if you chug don't be anal if invader chugs himself.
Also on uneven invasions it's free for all, chug at will.
Expecting people to be honorable is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
I don't give a fuck what happens in a 1v1 since we're both trying to win with the tools we have.
However fuck gank squads, that's the real shit in this game. I got summoned into one and the other guys were just giving no mercy to the poor guy. Fuck that shit, black crystal out if that happens.

He thought not chugging made sense when I told him about it, but its not like the game spells out player-created etiquette for the shitloads of newcomers its brought in.
