The best tl;dr I can give you is this, but I also have to spoil some stuff in the process:
essentiially, in the context of the games, the forerunners are a long dead race of ancient ayy lmao's that had tech so advanced that they were basically gods, but hundreds of thousands of years before the setting of the games they vanished. They vanshed because, as you find out in the games, they were battling against an extragalactic space parasite known as the Flood, and were losing so badly and the flood was such a threat that they had to build an arrray of superweapons to wipe out all life in the galaxy just to starve the flood off at the cost of their own lives and the lives of every sentient being in the galaxy that they couldn't ferry off to The Ark, which was another megastructure in addition to the halo rings that was built for the purpose of saving some life and then reseeding it after the Halo array did iit's job.
The aliens you fight iin the games, The Covenant, worshipped the forerunners as gods and are trying o activate the arrray because they think it will lead them to salvation, and brand humanity as heretics for reasons I won't spoil. The first halo game starts off with a random human ship wiith you on it happening upon a halo ring with covenant ships in pursuit (humanity doesn't know the forerunners are a thing or why the covenant wants them dead at this point (mostly, it's complicated)).
The Forerunner trilogy details the events that occurred hundreds of thousands of years ago from the perspective of the forerunners of how the war with the flood went down.
If you want to get into halo; read the fall of reach and play halo 1 and go from there.

Well, basically, the books (which actually started before the first game) have a much more grounded and darker tone then the games and are much close to firm but not quite hard sci fi unlike the games which as you know are almost action movie science fantasy.
The forerunner novels specifically go a step beyond that and as I said, start off as really dense hard sci fi that gradually becomes unhinged into fever dream psychological horror to full out cosmic horror with the flood and even ancient-er ayy lmaos.
Also, personally, I think the first halo game has the worst story (well, except for 4) and worst campaign.Story wise it's super barebones, compared to say 2 which has was morre narrative meat and delves into the political structure of the covenant a bit, and gameplay wise halo 1's campaign is super repetitive.
I encourage you to try halo 2, and read the fall of reach, which if the first halo novel and is a prequel to the first game. If you enjoy the tone of that novel and/or think halo 2 is an improvement over 1, keep going from there. Most of the halo books are good sci fi in their own riight.
The forerunner trilogy specifically is amazingly written but it's so deep into the lore that you'll have ways to go before you get to them. Actually, I suppose you could probably just read them as their own unique thing due to how separated it is from everything else in lore due to it taking place hundreds of thousands of years before the games.
If you wanna go that route, the first forerunner novel is Halo: Cryptum. The cosmic horror-y war of creation tier shit doesn't really come into play until book 3. Most of cryptum is worldbulding with the very start of the forerunner flood war occurring about 2/3-3/4th's of the way in. Book 2 is sort of like post apocalyptic fiction that turns into weird fever dreamish horror the more you get in.
Also a ton of different hominid species show up as characters, which is cool if you are into anthropology.

desu I like how barebones Halo 1 felt. I wouldn't say it was minimalist, but I felt like it was a nice contained story that didn't go too overboard but still felt like it was set in a larger universe. For a stupid shooter is all I wanted.
Btw since I mentioned it earlier, you should check out Marathon if you like older 90s shooters at all. That story starts out as a typical "ayyslium invasion" type story but quickly gets weird as fuck, with the third game in the trilogy involving warping between different realities

Honestly gettiing an xbone would be your best bet, as MCC has 1, 2, 3, 4 for 1 retail price all running at 1080p 60fps, with 1 and 2 having optional redone graphics and music. ODST is alo 5$ DLC then and you would be able to pick up 5, and wars iis basckwards compatible with no iissues on xbone.
Only loss is Reach, which runs at a low framerate on xbone backwards compatibility.
