Snake's reveal was fucking mindblowing at the time, as 3rd party characters appearing in Smash wasn't even an idea in the majority of people's heads yet let alone a choice as crazy out-there as fucking Snake from Metal Gear Solid.
It was truly magical, especially since everyone was still riding the Melee hype train and super excited about the game instead of shitposting about which babby party game is the best. No other fighting game announcement trailer or character reveal could possible top it imo. Smash will never be as exciting as it was in that moment.
If anyone thinks Cloud even comes remotely close simply because it was extremely improbable that a popular character often joked about in the community got in, you clearly wern't there for the shitstorm that turned into Japan Time.
I really wish I had played FFVII before Cloud got into sm4sh. Why the fuck would this matter? Motherfucking Diddy Kong's in. I don't think Sakurai isn't open to the possibility of western characters being in Smash, but he's just biased towards Japanese characters. That said, he could still add in Dixie Kong, maybe K. Rool, Dark Samus, or even a third-party like Rayman.
Master Chief COULD happen if Nintendo worked out something with Microsoft. Remember, they've worked with them in the past and Halo DS was almost a thing.
I actually think Master Chief is more likely than Scorpion and I'm a bigger MK fan than a Halo one.

And not even just for Smash, maybe they could have a Halo game for a future Nintendo handheld and use MC in Smash to promote it, though that seems unlikely now that the NX is most likely going to be a home console/handheld hybrid.
Still, it COULD happen. The biggest deterrent aside from Microsoft owning MC is Banjo-Kazooie since Sakurai and most Nintendo fans would prefer them rather than MC.
Remember, Cloud Strife got in and he's not associated with Nintendo in any sort of way, though the FF series does have some history with Nintendo.
