If you have to use a shield, you're just playing it easy and exploiting the game. If you have to constantly replenish your health, you're not trying hard enough in combat and are just looking for a crutch. And to go back on OP's point, if you have to summon anyone, you clearly aren't cut out for this type of game.

Really couldn't be farther from the truth. Getting invaded becomes less of a threat and enemies and bosses are not difficult in any sense of the word. Not that I'm complaining though, play the game the way you like.
If you level up or wear armor or use weapons, you are a casual. If you wear clothes while playing this game, you are casual and have never actually beat it.

I don't use online help in any way on my first playthrough, but anything available offline is fair game. I have no problems using NPC summons since they're part of the game, not a player addition. I used an NPC to help distract the fire phase of the abyss watcher, but he hardly put out any damage so I did the work myself.

Why should I waste my time fucking around with stupid bosses or running in circles looking for a pathway if I have the option to not waste that time?
I used summons to beat bosses because I didn't find fighting them on my own interesting or engaging.
I used a guide to figure out where I was meant to go because I got to the bottom of ash lake before even finding the crystal sage.
I'm enjoying the game in my own way, so fek eff m8.
Also the npc quests apparently fall apart if you find the swamp before going to church.

Soloed everything blind with an UGS. Shit was fairly easy with small difficulty spikes here and there, the worst being Sulyvahn and Nameless which took me 7 or 8 attempts each. Last 2 bosses were a joke which was disappointing. Soul of Cinder doesn't have shit on Gwyn (not using parries of course).
Game's really not terribly hard and beating it isn't some huge achievement.
