Sometimes this game makes me wonder why it could not be a single cd. Remove the tidbits with Ellone (beginning of the game and the training center after the ball) and the flashbacks with Laguna and the game would actually fit perfectly well into a cd.

More intelligently put, he was an introvert who never needed anyone's help and liked doing things himself. He felt it was better that way. For 1/3 of the game you're literally just reading his head. It puts you in the mind of Squall and how he feels towards things.
Then as the game progresses he realizes how important it is for humans to have companions, and work together. He puts all his bullshit aside, and he becomes one of the best leaders in the game.
In the beginning of the game he helps somebody with directions in the school. He's a pretty cool guy.
