Stealth genre is dead because it's not compatible with mainstream audience at all. All recent stealth games have basically been action hybrids to sell the idea to non-traditional stealth audience.

Well that's strange, this really neat stealth game called DEADBOLT came out last month. Why would a game come out in a dead genre? Here's some evidence to support my claim.

It's $9.99 on Steam and is made by the same dev who made Risk of Rain, who you might remember as that one anon in /agdg/ on /vg/ who actually went places.

Klei Entertaintment makes a good stealth game on occasion. Mark of the Ninja is alright and Invisible, Inc is pretty good too, though the downloadable content for that game really got me in a tizzy since the ending was exactly the same as in the original game. >>
>>334678607

Is the stealth genre the most accomplished genre of games ever?

MGS3, Thief 2, Hitman Bloodmoney, Chaos Theory etc

I don't care if the genre is dying, dead, slowly being revived, whatever, it's fucking irrelevant as I got to experience all of those and they were nothing short of the most incredible gaming experiences i've ever had.

I don't know what to say. every game mechanic I can think of in this game is really good

>>
>>334691570
It's pretty good, but I like Mark of the Ninja more, solely because Invisible, Inc has those roguelike elements and thus harder for me to ever possibly complete, where as Mark of the Ninja is the same every time and thus I could most certainly complete it one way or another. I don't know why, but I almost always have trouble when it comes to games that are roguelike or have roguelike elements. Never have beaten one, outside of Fatal Labyrinth on the Sega Genesis.
>>
>>334692016
the main thing I like about it that I wish other stealth type games would do is have no savescumming and no 'never detected' type bonuses or detection = everything goes to shit. getting detected just means it gets harder faster, just like waiting around for ages, as well as obviously the guy detecting you trying to kill you. so you're balancing sneakan with getting shit done, you're making hard decisions all the time
>>
So are these games meant to be played by saving every few minutes or what? Trying to play an entire level from beginning to end in stealth games is one of the most unfun experiences I've had, with the only exception being Blood Money which actually feels balanced around such an approach.
>>
>>334692228
Yeah, I'll admit that it's pretty good how the game handles detection. My main complaint is simply that if I lose outright I have to start over from the beginning.

That's the main thing I hate about roguelikes and games with roguelike aspects in general, that whole "one chance to complete the entire game" aspect. Only reason I was even able to beat Fatal Labyrinth was once you made it past the 5th floor the game starts to save at every 5th level and you can keep going provided you don't turn the game off.

Roguelikes on PC, while fun on occasion, I can't really beat at all ever because that's not the game I'm good at, and any game that I can't beat I eventually either get frustrated with or bored of and end up uninstalling, possibly not playing it ever again. A lot of it is up to chance, naturally, and games of chance I'm generally horrible at.

Sure there was that time in my math class in my junior year of high school where we were playing craps with our grades, doing math as we went and I somehow won 50 times in a row and ended up getting an A+ for the entire semester and was allowed to play video games on the teacher's computer during the final, but that's literally the only time I've ever done good at a game of chance my entire life. Probably will be the only time unless I somehow get into buying lottery tickets and somehow hit the jackpot.

Still, I'll probably try and beat Invisible, Inc one of these days, but since a ton of it is up to chance I don't see myself doing that any time soon, and with that on my mind I don't really want to play it right now. I still like it, but it's one of those games that I just really don't want to play despite liking it. Kind of like how Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is one of my all-time favorite video games and yet that one bit with the fucking werewolf that I've only been able to beat without noclip once keeps me from playing through it a 7th time. Maybe if using Obfuscate did shit against it.
>>
>>334693369

I'd have said Bloodmoney feels the least balanced in that respect.

With the exception of the odd instant fail state, pretty much all of them make it easy enough for the player to retreat to safety and try again but with penalties of some sort.
>>
>>334693665
aren't you playing on scrub mode? that gives you 3 rewinds and a restart every mission. I play on expert usually and am about good enough to win all the time. expert plus really shits in my ass

managing risk is pretty much the entire game though so if you're a 'grr rng muh esports ;_;' guy then I got nothing. they did an expansion at some point, maybe get that if you get around to trying it again. it adds some new stuff, new characters and items, and a couple of fun hard levels part way through the campaign
>>
>>334693750
What I mean is that the formula there is basically you doing a few test runs of the level to observe the routines of the characters, forming your plan and then just executing it on one go. The stealth itself isn't very demanding, it's just figuring out how to get the best rank that's difficult. And I mean, I guess you can keep playing after fuck ups but it just feels very unrewarding, while trying to master games just destroys any kind of immersion and usually highlights the flaws in the AI.
>>
I know nothing about the hitman game released this year. tell me: it's shit, isn't it

>>
>>334693967

Ah yep that makese sense.

I always felt like Thief and Splinter Cell were pretty good at letting you cautiously plod your way through a level, but Hitman absolutely benefited from replaying of a level after figuring it out.
>>
>>334693665
>Roguelikes on PC, while fun on occasion, I can't really beat at all ever because that's not the game I'm good at, and any game that I can't beat I eventually either get frustrated with or bored of and end up uninstalling, possibly not playing it ever again. The real fun of roguelikes is seeing how far you can get by improvisation, you dont really "play to win"
>>
>>334693936
Yes, I was playing on "scrub" mode. I still manage to end up using all of my rewinds and my restart sometime around the third or fourth mission. I got to the end of the game once but then the exact same thing happened. I was furious and ended up uninstalling the game. Haven't touched it since.

I'll be honest, I'm not very bright, largely because of being developmentally disabled and having some degree of brain damage. Sure I'm an eloquent retard, but I'm dumber than the average bear. Just because someone has Autism doesn't mean they're a genius or even a savant.

Hell, I just fried the motherboard and who knows what of a $600 computer a couple days ago while trying to install a new power supply because I thought that was what was causing it to shut down at random, when really the fucker just needed a new CPU fan which would have costed maybe $20. Regardless, risk management and/or calculation is something I can't really do unless it's like "DURR DO I GO INTO DEE ROAD WHEN DER IS A SEMI COMING DOWN AT FULL SPEED?" no you do not go into the road when there's a semi coming down at full speed you fat sweaty mongoloid. Referring to myself of course. So naturally games games with roguelike elements that require a lot of risk management - Invisible, Inc of course being one such game - are ones that I am going to do miserably at.

I'm not great at strategy games either, save that period of time in Starcraft where I could use zerg rush and my schizophrenic friend who thought he was Jesus but with a tracking device shoved up his ass was unable to do anything until he somehow managed to learn how to play Protoss like a professional. Invisible, Inc of course is also a strategy game so I'm going to do twice as badly, naturally.

I'll try again one of these days mind you, but probably not until I get a new computer as this toaster cannot run it that well at all it would seem.
>>
>>334689681

but cover based shooters are built around waiting as well
>>
>>334694838
Who said cover shooters are good?
>>
>>334694680
Oh I can improvise. Just not when playing roguelikes. You give me a kitchen full of ingredients and chances are I can probably make something edible, or at least edible to potheads and the mentally ill. Otherwise I'm limited by what I've got on hand, and chances are in a game like Invisible, Inc that's not much.

In a game like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim I've probably got enough to single-handedly wipe out any and all Thalmor presence in Tamriel by the time I'm level 20, and in a game like Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines all I need is to be Malkavian and have a Franchi SPAS-XV, a SWAT rifle and the Odious Chalice.

Invisible, Inc is a game where I'm probably going to be given shit loot, outside of maybe a copious amount of credits, and even then the money is probably only going to be good for stat boosts. Just like how your average shop in ADOM or Tales of Maj'Eyal doesn't have anything I want, your average nanofabricator in Invisible, Inc doesn't have anything I want either. Don't get me started on Derrek. Fucking MONST3R never has shit I want, outside of occasionally having a good implant and only when I've already gotten my crew upgraded in that regard. I

have really bad luck with procedural loot nine times out of ten. Then again I probably don't know what half the shit in Invisible, Inc does.
>>
>Stealth genre dies as normies take over vidya industry

Can't say I'm surprised that games like Thief or Blood Money will never be made again. They're just too much for casual normie let's players.

I keep hoping there will be a trend of crowdfunded stealth vidya like what we saw with the various decent CRPG projects.
