I call bullshit. In order for magic to actually do damage, you need at least 60 int. So unless assuming you did nothing but level int for your whole playthrough, you were probably way overleveled for him.
so let me explain why the boss was easy for you
you're choosing a playstyle where you stay far away and poke at the boss with soul arrows rather than up close where he can hit you more easily. of course the boss is going to be easier when you're using projectiles and staying at a distance where you're out of the range of many of the boss' moves. this is a no brainer.
basically, you're making the game easier for yourself. magic the souls games' easy mode.

Almost every boss in the game will push your shit in if you try and throw a spell from neutral from anything less than max range, and max range almost never happens because bosses move towards you constantly.

Swordspear is fucking amazing. +5'd it and I have had zero regrets. In pvp people don't know what it's weapon skill really does so they just stand still when I'm at a distance and get thunder bolted for 450-650ish damage.

You remove the threat of being close to enemies by killing them from your safe space. When you can roll to dodge every attack and enemy throws at you, then you can talk shit about other builds. Spellswords are GOAT for that reason, you combine the harder elements of both.

Where do you get this Dark Sword everyone is talking about? I'm at the Cathedral of the Deep right now, rolling a... quality build, I guess it's called. I have Dex at 20 and Str at 24 (For that Cleaver I picked up on the road, my main weapon is the meme katana, but I want to try and get better with the Cleaver and that Exile Curved GS I found). This is my second souls game, the first being BB.
Thus far, I died against the tutorial boss about 5 times, and each boss after that has had me dying once, or twice in the case of that stupid tree and the retard spin. Hell, I think normal enemies fuck me up more. I still suck ass against the Evangelists and haven't gone back to the area after the Fire Demon that has two of them waiting to rape my mouth after they wombo combo'd me to death. Also, I have a plethora of gems. Should I be using them on these early game weapons? And where the fuck can I get some large titanite? My weapons have been stuck at +3 forever.

You can fight them one at a time, and they even fight the other enemies around them so it's possible for one or both to get killed and still drop loot.
And yes, they are in the Farron Keep area. There's even another darkwraith if you take a left at the first bonfire and go straight ahead.
