Greetings /v/ and smash fans
I'm extremely autistic so so I hosted a "Let's find out who the best AI is in Super Smash Bros is" tournament.
Here were the rules I used:
- Matches were 1v1
- Stock Match with 5 stock each
- Stage was be selected at random
- ALL stages were included in the random
- ALL characters participated (even the unlockable ones)
- ALL AI were set to lvl 9 (highest)
- ALL items were available (default settings)
- Damage was set to default
- Bracket was double elimination
- Bracket seeds were randomised for the first bracket and performance based thereafter
10 double elimination tournaments were held and I've got all the results here ready to share with you but I wanna get some ideas on which ones characters you think did well and which ones sucked.
I'll reveal rankings one at a time from the worst to the best. The "worst" character was the character with the highest average finishing position over all of the brackets.
There were some characters than never versed each other (such is the nature of brackets) so I just put them against each other in a single match at the end.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have I'll do my best to answer them all.
Some general observations
- Items tend to make CPUs spaz out. When they both reach an item at the same time they'll sheild roll around it until the item dissapears.
- The Samus stage and unlockable Mario stage aren't good for the CPU's. They either walk of stage unintentionally or fall into the fire pits below trying to get an item.
- The hammer is extremely OP and the CPUs AI isn't good at avoiding it at all. Also plenty of occurances where the CPU holding the hammer would walk off the stage randomly.
- Planted mines were a fucking disaster. Most of the time they'd be randomly thrown and it would be the person who threw it who would be more likely to run it over.
- Fire flowers were comical. Once a CPU player got caught in them, they'd take the full damage of it 90% of the time. I'd say worse than hammer if you're a CPU player.
Come on kids get in here I know there's autists like me here somewhere.
>You turned items on
You fucked the experiment up before it even begun, you know that right?
>Guys I'm gonna flip this coin a hundred times and let you know if heads or tails won!
>>334666994
I bet Pikachu did shitty.
Through countless hours of play, me and my buddies have determined that a White-colored Luigi is the strongest CPU in Smash 64. Can you confirm?
>>334668128
There's always gonna be an element of randomness. Items are part of smash so they're in there.
>>334668186
Can confirm.
Here's the first loser:
Jigglypuff - 12th position
> Generally sucked overall
> Never used the "sleep" smash
> Only won when massivley assisted by items
> Terrible durability - getting easily smashed off the stage at 70%+
Worst against - Luigi (just about everyone desu)
Best against - DK
One more to keep the ball rolling. This one surprised me.
DK - 11th position
> Very durable but used this terribly
> More worried about charging up his punch than fighting
> Sluggish and terrible at using his UP+B
> 0/10 did not expand dong
>>334668358
>There's always gonna be an element of randomness. Items are part of smash so they're in there.
This isn't a competition of how random one is, or how good the random number generator is.
This is, by your own admission, a test of skill between CPUs.
I go to EVO and put a gameshark on the Street Fighter IV machine that makes it where both players randomly get upgrades while they play. Is it a test of skill, then? Of course not. Even though both players are just as capable/able to get beneficial random buffs, it's no longer a test of skill between the player as it is a test of how the RNG was feeling at the time.
Link in SSB64 is particularly vulnerable to items because of his poor recovery. Nothing against his AI skill, it's just he has no answer to people throwing bob-ombs and lasers at him.
>>334668903
True - but we're testing AI skill as well. AI interact with items in a different way and although it contributes somewhat to the random nature of the results, they're a part of smash like I said so they've been included.
Comparing smash to Street Fighter is an odd comparison though considering they're different genre of game but I see your point.
Kirby - 10th position
> Similar issues to Jigglypuff but other abilities slightly made up for this
> More interested in "sucking" enemies than fighting
> Very poor utilisation of "sucked" power
> Very rarely used DOWN+B (brick)
Worst against - Captain Falcon / Link
Best against - Jigglypuff
Samus - 9th position
> Similar issues to DK, too much priority on lazon cannon charge up than fighting
> Some glimpses of briliance (placed 2nd and 1st in 2 of the brackets)
> Probably the most inconsistant performer of the bunch
Worst against - Mario / Ness
Best against - Yoshi / Kirby
>>334669638
Yoshi - 8th position
> Not enough movement to get back into the stage (no UP+B)
> Situationally good - actually owned some of the higher ranks but terrible against lower ranks
> Got lucky with some items and won but never good enough to win overall
Worst against - Link
Best against - Captain Falcon / Mario
Among my own tests with no items on battlefield, Samus proved to be the best AI.
Strange how items effect the AI performance.
>>334669927
Fox - 7th position
> Way too much priority on defence and just spamming his lazor gun
> Terrible at using UP+B to get back to the stage
> Situationally good against slower characters but lacked consistancy
Worst against - Link
Best against - Mario
This one will probably surprise some considering how dominant Fox is in a lot of the smash games because of his speed. Honestly his AI is total garbage, he wasn't even close in a lot of cases.
Mario - 6th position
> Consistant performer - never really good enough to win
> Passive playstyle and too many counters
> Got dominated by faster characters
> Impressive move set but very inefficient
Worst against - Fox
Best against - Samus/ DK
>>334670239
Yeah the AI has a messed up sense of priority
Luigi - 5th position
> Consistant performer - never really good enough to win
> Passive playstyle and too many counters
> Movement not fast enough - got some good UP+B smashes in but only situationally good
Worst against - Captain Falcon
Best against - Jigglypuff
Mario and Luigi tied which I thought was quite comical. Their performances varied and toe to toe they actually came out even as well.
Did op get smashed?
Pikachu - 4th position
> Fairly consistant performer - hovers around 7th to 2nd
> Really good UP+B to get back on the stage
> Hardly used throws at all when she's got arguably the best throw in the game
Worst against - Link
Best against - DK (ownage)
Getting close to the business end now. Only 3 to go.
Ness - 3rd position
> Inconsistant performer (never won - can sometimes be knocked out in last if against the wrong opponent)
> Very hard to knock off the stage
> Extremely efficient at using UP+B (PK Thunder) to get back on the stage when knocked off
Worst against - Link
Best against - Captain Falcon (ownage)
Not sure if there are any lurkers but if there are what's your prediction for 1st?
I can't fucking believe Ness is top 3.
>>334671710
You weren't kidding about autism but this is actually pretty cool, definitely lurking OP
>>334671710
Captain Falcon is number one for sure.
If Link wins I'll fucking draw some fan art.
Here it is lads - hope you enjoyed. It was pretty comical watching all these matches. Good little waste of time.
Captain Falcon - 2nd position
> Situationally good - coal or diamonds
> Shockingly bad at hitting B (falcon punch) but wanted to use it quite often
> Very durable and aggressive
Worst against - Ness (ownage)
Best against - Kirby / Jigglypuff
Link - 1st position
> Domination in all cases - even match ups sometimes but mostly dominant
> Never used DOWN+B (bombs) oddly enough
> Very aggressive all of the time
Worst against - Fox
Best against - No one (surprise?)
>>334671710
Sounds like Falcon.
>>334671995
Riot nerf
>>334671995
Fuck
Me
>>334671995
>The second worst character in the game has the best AI
Kek
>>334671778
Yeah this surprised me too but it seems AI was quite happy to just stand there and get blasted by pk fire / pk thunder.
>>334671916
Looks like you're gonna be busy then
>>334672178
Honestly Links AI was savage. It was like watching a human vs CPUs. Pretty crazy.
I also don't think I saw him pull a bomb once.
>>334672387
>Link is the first opponent in Classic Mode
>He's a fucking push over
>Number 1 here
Now I have to draw some shit. Fuck
Its time lads. Top 4 face off. Predictions?
>>334672845
MY MAN PIKACHU OF COURSE
Nice thread op, though i'd like one without items if you're ever this bored and autistic again
>>334672845
Ofc I random Samus' stage. This is gonna be fun.
