Dungeon design is pretty boring, there's tons of errors in the script, and combat is basic turn based jrpg, but the collecting and digivolving is really addicting.

I like how Etrian Odyssey does it.

You can apply status effects to bosses, but every time it wears off the boss's resistance to that effect gets stronger. So they're useful enough to help you reach the final stretch, but you can't cheese the entire fight with it.

Good. I really enjoyed it. The combat could be better balanced (some abilities make some Digimon near mandatory and some worthless) but the story/characters are fun and I got a bit choked up at the end.

Make some god damn new characters. Its fucking pathetic that after 20 years of jrpg experience, I could describe every single significant jrpg character using a as many character archtypes as I have fingers. For fucks sake just think outside the box japan.

Secondly, enough with these beat around the bush bullshit love interest plot lines. I'm tired the the tsundere bitch that finally warms up to the protagonist by the end of the game. I've had enough of the cute/innocent girl that is finally ready to be in her first relationship after a 50 hour fucking journey. This isn't the 19 fucking 00's, people fuck. I don't give a shit if it ruins some weebfag's self insert fantasy. And none of this implied bullshit bullshit either where you just kind of get hints that in the ending they "get together". Show me them fucking getting somewhere, and by the mid way point in the game.

Exploration.

It's what made older Final Fantasy games good: the ability to just wander around and find stuff. It's what made Grandia great. Dungeons being about figuring out how to progress, and not just following the path forward. Also, about tying events to character growth rather than just forcing the player to stop and watch some mandatory cutscenes.
