Skyrim is the worst offender of this. Every single cave/dungeon/fort consists of running in a big circle, then unlocking a door right next to the entrance.

Problem with Skyrim is that they didn't even try to hide it. You can see the ledge from which you will drop down as soon as you enter the dungeon and soon they all feel like they're designed with fear from backtracking in mind because they have no idea what to do with them after you get to the main loot part.

Souls games tend to camouflage this better but after a while you can see the shortcut coming from a mile away and they don't know how to explain it other than give some nonsensical reason as why this particular door won't open when you've already smashed through / opened countless other wooden structures.

Skyrim also could have avoided it by simply giving you a spell to warp back to the overworld. Dragon Quest and Ultima did this back in the 1980s. But Elder Scrolls is so focused on trying to be 'realistic' that they actually go too far. And things become laughably fake.

Skyrim would have benefited by being less realistic. Not just with the door junk, but the design of the world overall. And especially in a game where you can use magic to unlock doors, its just stupid that a 2x4 piece of wood blocks you.

Okay, there's a great game called iji where you can play through levels in different ways based on stats you chose. For example, if you put points in cracking you can hack many doors that are so thick a rocket cannot penetrate them. If you put points in STR you can smash some sturdy ones down and open new routes, lending itself for another playthrough.

Souls games already have weapons you cannot wield unless you have adequate STR. So if you have STR of say 40, why wouldn't you be able to chop a door or a tree down?

Well then we're pointing out the same flaw. I just went a little more in depth of why its shitty by pointing out multiple ways you should be able to get around it. Since Skyrim tries to focus so much on realism and alternate ways to get around things. Yet cave doors are the exception.
