The great debate

http://strawpoll.me/4281208

We've been over this a thousand times.

Cyberpunk is the only one that actually has punk in it, and Steampunk is a writhing miasma of shitty cogs and magic that hasn't had anything good in it in a century.
>>
>>334626245
Cyberpunk in the end.

I may like Steampunk, but Cyberpunk is miles more interesting.

If a story with aliens and space travel has the 'low life high tech' elements, is it Cyberpunk or Space Opera?
>>
>>334627227

Still cyberpunk.

If the focus of the story was on grand heroes attempting to battle aliens for the good of mankind or conflict on a truly grand scale, it might qualify for space opera, but if it's more focused on the low life high tech aspect then it's still rooted in cyberpunk.

Meh, it's always a metter of FOTM. During a decade Cyberpunk is more liked, the decade after people prefer steampunk.
I don't give a fuck, I'll always prefer Steampunk more. I like more "what if" scenarios than "possible future world" ones.

The winner will never not be Cyberpunk.

Steampunk will always be harmful to the suspension of disbelief as the technology is always impossible/magical in origin, while Steampunk is often the future a few decades or less before we get there, which when combined with a decent neo-noir atmosphere makes it much more pleasing to our logical faculties.

Nah, Cyberpunk fags love to shit on steampunk. Literally beating a dead horse.
>>
>>334630780
Basic problem with steampunk. Much of the time it just devolves into gluing gears to shit. I don't even really see the point of it. In Cyberpunk you explore the impact of technology on people. Dieselpunk deals with issues of diminishing resources. Steampunk...doesn't do shit?
>>
>>334629378

Cyberpunk is at least a somewhat realistic representation of a likely future. Steampunk is just shitty fantasy nonsense that would never work.
>>

I've had this thought that watchmakers must be livid at the steampunk scene. "You fucking little shits gluing useful stuff onto crap and making pure shit. You little fuckers!"

Cyberpunk because cyber punk has become real and no one wants to admit it.

>Personal telecommunication devices
>Completely integrated technology in modern society
>Extreme wealth is living in cyber comfort
>extreme poverty still has access to cyber technologies and global integrated networks.
>Universal connectors
>Medical technology advancing faster than actual medical practices.
>Extreme distress worldwide
>Gilded utopias of western society.

We LIVE in cyberpunk from the 80s. The difference is instead of the hidden away pipes and tubes that made underbellies of cities we made them look pleasant, computers got smaller. The ugliness that juxtapositioned the beauty in cyberpunk is still here, we just called it "normal"

>cyberpunk wins every single time, in every poll and every post

Steampunk era is gone, it was cool for a while but now only fat fedora edgy fags keep defending it, why would you want a brown steam world with retarded design and overuse of gear when you have unlimited potential with cyberpunk?
>>
>>334631473
This. Cyberpunk done well can have real world applicability. Steampunk is just for the looks.
>>
Besides Arcanum, what good Steampunk games are there?
>>
>>334631473
Isn't that why William Gibson quit writing cyberpunk, because he felt the line between fiction and reality got so blurred he didn't even bother.
>>
>>334632025
>real world applicability
I don't get this point. I mean, many genres have no "real world applicability", like Tolkien-like fantasy or even good old fairy tales. That doesn't mean those two genres are worse or less successful than genres with "real world applicability".
Not everything needs to be grounded to reality to be good. Sometimes immagination is just as good.
>>
>>334626245
its a cyber punk prison riot level
>>
>>334631098
Steampunk is divergent technological lines.
"What if we had developed this technology instead of the other?"
Tesla instead of Edison.
Airguns instead of gunpowder
etc.
Not that I'm a fan.

Cyberpunk is what our modern everyday has turned into.

Why do you think cyberpunk up and vanished in the early 2000s? Personal computers became real, the internet began to form into what it is now. Everything about cyber punk has come
true
Cyberpunk IS real
>>
>>334632572
I know, I was simply saying a genre isn't necessary better just because it's more applicable to reality.
>>
>>334627909
Samara is bae tier.
>>
>>334632359
Well sure, but I think with cyberpunk it's built into the genre, so you often end up with better stories and settings in cyberpunk just by painting by numbers. Better than steampunk, at any rate
>>
Cyberpunk, definitely. I like the idea of steampunk, but I feel like there isn't much that's actually been done with it. The whole genre is just a shitty cosplay subculture with gears glued onto everything, and repaints of the exact same fucking Nerf gun. Also, there's nothing punk about it since it's usually about rich aristocratic adventurers, not the oppressed lower class fighting the establishment.
