I have a Gateway from before good CFW was a thing so I still use it for the extra storage, but there's no reason to use either now that CFW exists and can be used on all firmwares.

If you wanted to pirate before this year, you had to pay. I have a blue button Sky3DS because at the time my firmware was too new for a gateway.
Now I have CFW on my shit but the sky3ds is still handy to have since it can hold more games than the 3ds. The 4 fucking hours it took to install CFW was awful though.

When did the CFW shit first become a thing? At the time (I think june of last year) the only piracy discussion I ever heard was about Gateway and Sky3ds.
Gateway is great if you like having to put your 3ds to sleep in order to reset the bugged 3D screen every time you power up the system.

9.2 CFW came out around like February/January 2015. Before then you had to deal with a buggy as fuck, unstable CFW that only worked on like 4.5 or something.

Basically, you update (or downgrade) the system to 9.2, use entrypoints to install homebrew launcher, create emuNAND, unlink the emuNAND from sysNAND, then update emuNAND to the latest version.
