I almost never play multiplayer games anymore. I only ever really enjoyed the couch multiplayer experience, and now that I'm old adnd have moved to a different country, all of my friends either don't play videogames anymore, or live too far away.
Sometimes I play Mario Kart, Smash, or Rockband with my girlfriend, and those three get pretty heavy rotation when we host a party at our place.
But that's about it.
I definitely get more enjoyment and longevity out of a good single player experience, in general.

Those are hard to make and modern game devs are too busy being big-shot movie producers anyway.
Besides, some games can't support stories by nature of their setting and scope. Cheap, low-brow stories rely on characters to convey purpose and emotion, and in games that aren't character-centric, stories that appeal to a wide audience are harder to write unless a character is somehow forcefully (and woefully) included.
I'm sure everyone would love SimCity from the perspective of Joe Sim, the upstart mayor who must make good/evil decisions and sacrifices that affect his family and loved ones or the city at large, but the people who liked the original game just wanted to build cities and play with digital toys.

sure though, we do need great stories. the people here who are "anti-story" simply haven't experienced a good game story. actually, it's likely that they have but it was interwoven and told cleverly with the gameplay and didn't rely on cheap cinematic techniques, so they perhaps didn't equate it with the tragically-normal idea of game story (cutscenes, or any form of stopping the gameplay to explicitly tell the player some "story stuff"). the fact of the matter is, most game stories, including ones which are praised as stories, are piles of trash. barely any utilize their medium, video games, for their hugely powerful storytelling abilities at all. and then people get the impression that game stories can only be expressed when they force the player out of the normal gameplay. because of that separation of "story" and "gameplay", people think that they're just naturally separated and they don't belong together. but a good game story will be told at all levels, and especially through gameplay. regretfully, barely any games actually do that.

The absolute best thing you can say about TLOU is that it had good characters and interaction between characters sometimes.
Most of them were 1 note and nobody except elie and jole really went anywhere. The overall plot is forgettable cliche and boring gameplay is just kinda tedious and mostly made difficult by the fact that you can carry 6 different weapons but only 12 bullets, enemies having infinite ammo and being able to tank headshots while dropping almost no ammo themselves.

Story in games is meant to cater the movie-watching generation. It's also a very cheap way to denote progress during a video game. Instead of introducing new mechanics that keep the game interesting, just have a big plot twist in your video game to keep the plebs entertained.
The Witcher 3 is the only exception to this, the gameplay and story just work perfectly.
