Is endlessly tinkering with one franchise, free from visual constraints and engaging directly with the player's imagination the patrician way of doing things? After all, Dwarf Fortress will never grow old.

Because it's not something easily achievable. Even if you dedicate yourself totally to your game and work on it everyday and release free content all the time doesn't suddenly mean everyone is going to donate money/give you money.
