Is endlessly tinkering with one franchise, free from visual constraints and engaging directly with the player's imagination the patrician way of doing things? After all, Dwarf Fortress will never grow old.
Why don't more devs attempt it?
he's also rather poor, and doesn't do anything besides just working on the game.
if a disaster were to happen he would be shit out of luck, there are not a lot of people willing to live like he does.

Because it's not something easily achievable. Even if you dedicate yourself totally to your game and work on it everyday and release free content all the time doesn't suddenly mean everyone is going to donate money/give you money.
