Suppose Dark Souls (and Boodborne) didn't have their visual aesthetic. Would they be as popular? Are visuals the most underrated part of the series?
>>
I think they'd still be popular, but they would be more niche. Gameplay only games aren't actually that popular in the main.
>>
>>334586205

considering a game as ugly as demon's souls got them popular, no, not really
>>
>>334586812
Surely it's the opposite though, Demon's Souls was a mild success but Dark Souls is when it really got popular, and that was when the aesthetics became great.
>>
>>334586812
des had good aesthetic design despite it's dated graphics

Dark Souls 1 had really good art direction but the series didn't become good-looking until Bloodborne. And DaS3 looks amazing on PC. But yeah, I think the art direction goes a long way in these games.
>>
>>334587410
I think what you're really saying is that DaS2 looked shit. Which it did.

When you went hollow you looked like a comedy zombie.
>>
>>334587481
Yeah DaS2 was really fucking ugly. Couldn't play more than five hours of that game before I was spent watching the ugly copypaste corridors.

>>
>>334587610
Some of the areas looked nice. Anor Londo on water was kind of pretty.
>>
aesthetics are totally one of the most important parts of the series (don't confuse this with graphical fidelity)
>>
>>334586812
demon's souls had a fantastic aesthetic though.
>>
>>334586205
Souls games are mainly popular because muh hardcore difficulty, not because of their visuals. Everyone knows this.
>>
What would you want the setting of the next souls game to be? We've had medieval (in DaS3 with some neoclassical stuff added in like the cathedrals), and Victorian in Bloodborne.

Personally, and I'm not memeing, I think India's history has some potential. There's loads of crazy gods, weird weapons, and interesting aesthetics. You've got everything from deserts to jungles to mountain monasteries.
>>
>>334588434
I could definitely sign up for some Oriental mythology.
>>
>>334588434
could be pretty cool.
for me, i have no idea. i'm glad dark souls 3 is apparently the last. after all, the attempt at making a new ip is what brought demon's souls in the first place. i just hope they can make a new damn game which is as good and unique as that was. i'm afraid they may have reached a status at which that kind of experimentation might not be as available to them.
>>
>>334588315
There are a lot of hard games out there. Few of them as popular as Souls game. It's obviously something more than just difficulty.

>>334588434
Greek mythology. Make it fucking happen, Miyazaki.
>>
>>334586205
Not really. DaS started off as a good game, people liked them for their wholeness, every single detail worked to create something bigger than itself.
>>
>>334586427
This. If Dark Souls looked like western elf simulator 3000 I probably would've thrown it an ignore.
>>

I haven't gotten a hold of any decent dual weapons yet, are they decent/fun to use or just a gimmick?

Not at all, I'm constantly seeing the Souls games touted as aesthetic masterpieces

Especially Bloodborne
>>
>>334588434
I just want to play a Souls game that explores the East. There's plenty of stuff from the East in the Souls series, but you never actually visit the East itself.
>>
>>334589029
For me personally, DaS3 looks even better than BB. Seeing the Nameless King sweep in with his mount during the storm is some intense shit.

Does good DaS3 fan art exist yet?
>>
>>334589085
Hell, seeing as how DaS3 is apparently the last one, a DLC exploring a bit of the East would be fine too.

>DaS3 looks even better than BB
Nah.
>>
The thing that I like about it's aesthetic is that it takes a concept and then extends it massively, almost like a caricature but done seriously. I think it's really effective in how it's done.

Impossibly huge cathedrals and castles, which are still grounded in a weird way and seem like they could exist.
>>
>>334589009
They're fun as hell. Basically relies on using an L1 instead.

>>334589085
I just don't want it to become generic japanese fantasy weeb pandering.

There are sceneries like this in DaS3 aswell. And with even greater variety.

>weeb pandering
You should proceed to kill yourself.
>>
>>334591163
Nah, that's not what I mean. If they made an interesting game about eastern things in general, it would be really good. Especially if they went into the different parts of asia and explored all the different aspects.

My concern would be that instead of doing that they'd just make something that uses generic Japanese muh samurai stuff, which is kind of tired at this point.

The difference is, only the occasional area looks as good as that in DaSIII.
Whereas every where in BB looks that good.
>>
>>334591802
Bloodborne lacks variety, I like DS3's diverse approach more
>>
>>334586205
>the most underrated part of the series
No they are often praised
>>
>>334586205
I thought DaS1 looked pretty ugly. Level and world design were great though
>>
>>334589085
Ni-oh is probably going to attempt to fill that niche, but it just won't be a Souls game without all the lore and design choices and character customization.
>>
>>334591957
DaSIII has more diverse environments, sure. Bloodborne didn't really lack variety, however.

>Central Yharnam
>Yahar'gul
>Hemwick Charnel Lane
>Lecture Theatre
>Cainhurst
>Forbidden Woods
>Nightmare Frontier
>Hunter's Nightmare
>Fishing Hamlet
>Research Hall
All unique from one another.

I want a souls game that's set in deserts and stuff.

Instead of everything being dark it can be harsh sunlight.
>>
>>334592470
>he hasn't played Harsh Sunlight Souls
>>
Greek/Roman/Persian all in one would be cool
I really want a dungeon that's in a giant creature though
>>
Aesthetics are the only reason I liked DaS3 to be honest, it lacks on everything else.
>>
What kind of environments do you guys want to see in the DLCs?

Every Souls game that exists (including BB) has outdated graphics for its generation and almost in every room in those games if you take a closer look you'll notice lots of goofy stuff that in many Triple As is not there.

Does that mean they are ugly games? Hell no, because the art direction is fucking great and it's more about composition than about detail. And they can't do more detail because it's a kind of game really hard to optimize since as you walk through rooms, the next ones are loading and the ones behind you are unloading, and the game has to deal as well with autosaves and online features.
>>
>>334592952
>it lacks on everything else
I think it has the best level design, the most interesting bosses and enemies, and by far the best difficulty curve in the series, including Bloodborne.
The only thing it lacks is the web-like structure of DaS and BB

Do you guys ever remember/see something from a game you played as kid that, at the time, you didn't really think that much of but now you think 'holy shit'

this is one of those moments, that looks fucking terrifying and i don't know how it didn't spook me as a kid.
>>
>>334591802
Bloodborne looks great but the Dancer fight in DaS3 is so damn beautiful. Like seeing a painting in motion.
